The Locked Cabinet and the Virus

I had been called to the city of sin for a bi-annual conference that I had taken for the past 24 years. I had sat through it in health, in the cold, rain, and sickness. I was there 10 days after Tupac was murdered, and was walking down Fremont street several months later on the day when they took Christopher Wallace. A year later in 1998, a colleague and I woke up to a phone call from my then wife telling me about what happened to President Clinton, and that was when the words, "For a blowjob?" coming from my companion led me into a similar predicament. For the next several years, a tangled divorce that I've never fully unwinded from, occupied my attention. It wasn't until the morning of September 11th in 2001 that gave me the wakeup call I needed. I scooted the young blonde out of my room and told her to call her dad, since I knew Tom was in New York that day.
Mosque bombings, terrorism, market bubble bursting, swine flu, recession, succession, shootings, a shooter, second divorce, new house, new life, and the same old job on the same old beat all meant that Las Vegas and I had been doing this dance through the thick and the thin for over two decades.
And I have never seen it like this.
My uber driver nodded, "Yeah man. Shit is wild. I only picked up 8 people in the last 9 hours."
He was young, the new leather interior in a wide bodied Escalade smelled like an expensive loan. His eyes were twitchy as he tried not stare at me, wondering if I was going to cough from all the dry mouthing I had been doing from the LAS to my hotel.
I had grown used to the stares, the selective social distancing for looking Chinese and all of its stereotypes as the weeks leading into March of 2020. The beginning trend of people instinctively coughing whenever they saw me soon became a daily ritual. It was all a part of tribe mentality I convinced myself, chuckling as I remembered the pie scene from the movie Stand By me.
That made my uber driver nervous.
"Here we are," he finally breathed.
I thanked him and proceeded to the service counter with my carry on.
"Sorry for the wait," replied the representative, "We laid off 80% of our staff this morning."
I was taken aback by her candid greeting.
"Looks like you'll be in a private room owned by one of our guests. And as it is not through the hotel, please contact your host for any services that you require. We will need a $500 deposit on a credit card for any incidentals."
Several minutes later I found myself riding the elevator up 26 stories and into my rental. I contacted my host through the app to let him know that I had arrived. It was my first time using the app service so if anyone wants to chime in on how necessary or unnecessary that action is, please, enlighten me.
I had chose this room because there was a large, deep soak bathtub. I don't have many preferences in life but if there is a chicken fried steak on the menu I must get it at least once, coke over pepsi, and onion rings. Don't ask me why they are all food based, but they are, except for the bathtub. At nearly 6'1 I am always trying to find a decent soak. When I was younger my grandmother owned a Japanese soaking barrel, and ever since then I have been chasing after that nostalgic experience. Instead I often find myself cramming, contorting, and cold above the chest.
There was not much for me to do as President Trump had canceled his conference with the Jewish Coalition, which meant that other subsequent CEO's began withdrawing from all the other Vegas conferences. Something that I should have foreseen, which could have otherwise prevented me from traveling during this time. But there was no helping it, and this was definitely not the worst place to be stuck in.
I looked into the bathroom mirror and decided to wash the trails of the airport from my face and then made my way down to the casino floors. Everything was closed. All the restaurants anyways. So I hailed a cab and found my way to Gordon Ramsay's Hells Kitchen. The best lobster risotto I ever had, a mediocre bar experience, a change of hands for an 8 ball on the street, and I was on my way into Caesar's Palace. I had reasoned with myself that my foresight was not the best at this time so blackjack and poker were out of the question. I stuck to roulette and craps, winning big at the dice. And if you've ever been to a high roller table then all the movies are true, there you will find willing women to blow on the ivories for you.
Somehow we found our way back to my room, a slew of fancy cocktail dresses and Victoria secret's underwear were strewn in a near comical fashion. A rolled Benjamin walked down Abbey road. And there's nothing quite like two young and beautiful women taking pictures of your junk to brag to their friends later to accentuate your high. Everyone loves an anomaly.
The two of them were in town for CONEXPO, one of the world's largest construction gatherings. One was 28 and a leading architect for a large firm and the other was a 32 year old forewoman who was sent to accompany her to fill in the job's specifics.
"You've got soft hands for a construction worker," I quipped.
She raised her drawn in eyebrow at me, "Not as soft as a desk jockey's."
We both laughed until our eyes were drawn to the young architect who had begun to slowly undress in front of us. She swayed her hips to the lofi soul of Joji. My champagne glass sparkled in the light as the smells of girl scout cookies lit up the bathroom.
"You don't mind if I smoke do you?"
"Oh, give it here," came the architect's voice.
"I should probably get an ashtray."
I got out of the tub and walked into the living area. I pulled open a few drawers, and found nothing. I tugged on the handles of the cabinet underneath the wetbar only to find it locked. That was when I noticed the notice stickied on its door, "Please do not open. These are my private possessions," made with a cheap labeler. "There's probably alcohol in this thing," I said aloud. I turned to look into the bathroom but neither of them seemed to care as I watched the water falling from their hair and down their backs. The rest of the night was well, you can imagine.
I woke up around 4:30 A.M. and heard an ungodly rattling. As I stirred in bed, I heard a voice asking sleepily, "What was that?"
"I don't know," came another voice. "It's probably the pipes or something."
The architect was unsure so she got up and turned on a light. She turned to look at me, "Did you get this on AirBNB?"
"Yeah, something like that."
We heard the rattle again. I could tell that she was afraid so I decided to get up with her.
"Do you know where the light is," she asked?
"Nope," I said as I struck a match for dramatic effect.
"Oh god," she rolled her eyes.
I smiled, "It's more fun this way."
She grabbed my arm as we made our way into the larger part of the suite in search of the noise. We looked in the closet, the bathroom, the enclosed toilet, and I even pulled a few drawers open for effect.
"What is this," she asked me. She had found the cabinet under the wetbar.
"I don't know. It was locked when I got here." I struck another match, "It says not to touch it or something, owner's possessions I think."
"Oh god, that is so creepy," she moaned. "I once went to this place in Lake Tahoe and it wasn't until the last day that my boyfriend found a loft that was hidden because the stairs had been removed. When he climbed it, there was a router and a twin sized bed in the corner. Super chills man."
"Well, the cabinet is too small for anything weird to be in there," I told her.
"You don't know that, have you ever seen those double jointed circus people?"
"Well, if there's some more champagne in there, then I wouldn't mind breaking the lock."
"It would be warm," she said.
"Ah yes, the important things."
We laughed, but just as we were going to get back into bed she ran into the bathroom and got a towel and tied an extensive knot around the handles.
Several hours later we were woken up with a loud banging. I bolted up in bed.
"Sir!"
My mind raced to gather itself and assess at least 9 things wrong with my current situation. Cops, someone's boyfriend, my wife? Oh shit, why was I still getting myself into these predicaments? You would think I've learned a thing or two by now.
"Sir! This is hotel security. Are you in there sir? We're asking everyone to evacuate the building."
I got out of bed and rushed to open the door before they keyed their way in, "Hey what is going on?"
A man in an N95 mask and gloves was at the door, "Sir, we've been asked to evacuate everyone out of the building immediately. The hotel will be closing due to SARS-COV-2."
"What's going on," one of the girls asked.
"Miss, everyone needs to leave. We are evacuating the building. Please gather your belongings."
I looked at my companions and subsequently told them, "I can't believe they canceled Vegas."
For the next 20 minutes we scrambled to get ready. For a group of strangers it worked decently well. We cut the last lines and split it between the three of us. A smile, a kiss, and a hurried goodbye later meant that we found ourselves rushing for the elevator.
"Oh god, I forgot about the towel I tied to the cabinet," the architect said.
"It shouldn't be that much of a problem. Someone will just take it off later," I tried assuring her.
"What if no one gets back in there for weeks?" She looked at me slightly anxious, as if she was afraid to breathe the words, and a side of me knew what she was going on about.
"Alright, I'll go back," I told her.
The forewoman looked confused.
"I'll got with you," the architect said.
"No, you two get downstairs and see what is going on."
She looked at me with these doe eyes, the same look that has kept me awake for the past several days as I am laying here in boredom.
"I'll be fine I told her."
I ran back to the room, slid my keycard and began to untie the knot on the cabinet. And in my paranoia I took a video recording of the place before leaving, just so that I had evidence that the room was left in relatively good order later. The door slammed behind me, I pulled up my app to request an Uber as I made my way to the elevator. My phone vibrated, it must be the app I reasoned as I began shifting through my luggage to make sure I had gotten everything. When I reached the ground floor I searched for my two companions but found hotel personnel were rushing people into open taxis and Ubers to the airport. An entitled prick stood outside the valet desk as a manager profusely apologized for the inconvenience and how the hotel would compensate for one thing or another as he opened the door to a Porsche Panamera.
There was nothing for me to do except get into an Uber. I pulled up my phone expecting to see a familiar message that notified me that my driver would be arriving in 3 minutes, but instead it was a message from my host that simply said, "Thank you."

Salut Gilles - The History of a little Canadian who took Formula One by storm. part.II

Part I
312 T4 1980 - A BAD SEASON
Gilles.
The 1980 season saw Gilles as one of the favourites for the WDC title but the season was a disaster: the new 312 T5 was one if not the worst Ferrari cars that raced in Formula One.
It was a simple evolution of the T4, that lacked the ground effect of the wing cars of the other teams combined with a poor chassis and the same aspirated engine V12 from the previous year, since Ferrari preferred focusing on the turbo engine that would be implemented the next year.
Ferrari would score the first victory-less season since 1973 and performance were poor, taking only a few points in all the season; due to the poor car performance, the lack of motivation and disagreement with the safety and the lack of humanity of the Circus, Jody Scheckter retired at the end of the season, aged just 30, satisfied with the title he obtained the year before.
In the inaugural Gran-Prix in Argentina, Gilles qualified 8th and had a wild day in the race: first, he went off trying to overtake Mario Andretti and came back in 12th, then made a mistake duelling with Piquet, then duelled again with Jones, then duelled again with Piquet that was passed by Jones; Gilles was in 2nd place, but his wild driving took the best out of the old T4 and he crashed out due to a suspension failure on lap 37.
In Brasil, Gilles qualified 3rd and took the lead of the Grand-Prix after the start, however, he quickly fell in the classification order and pitted in the 6th lap to change his tires. He retired at the 36th lap due to a throttle issue and was classified 16th.
Before the second race at Kyalami Gilles had a tremendous crash in the tests held at Le Castellet: he went off at 290km/h (180.1 mp/h) destroying the guardrail; he was unscathed and Renè Arnoux remembers the day:
"I saw his car to pieces when I was doing my lap, and I got back in the pits because I was worried for him, he was a little shook but had no injuries, when I asked him what happened he said - Man, today's cars sure are safe! I didn't get a scratch.-"
At Kyalami Gilles qualified 10th and rise up to 7th at the start of the race, however, he had again tire issues and was forced to pit at the third lap to change them and ultimately retiring at lap 30 again for a broken transmission.
At Long Beach he qualified again in 10th place before retiring again for a broken transmission at the 46th lap.
In Belgium, at Zolder, he qualified 12th and finished the race 6th taking his first point of the season after a 20 lap resistance against Arnoux, who finished 4th.
At Monaco, after qualifying 6th, Gilles suffered again tire problems, changing them at the 22nd lap and forcing a comeback after getting back from the pit in 14th. He finished 5th and took two more points.
Then in France, at Le Castellet, he qualified 17th; he did again an amazing start in the race, jumping from 17th to the 8th place but another pit-stop related to tire issues saw him fall to the 11th place; he forced his way up to the 8th place again, position in where he finished the race.
Silverstone was a disaster, Gilles qualified 19th and retired from the race at the 35th lap due to an engine problem.
In Germany, at Hockenheim, Gilles qualified 16th; in the race, another lightning start took him from 16th to 11th, at the end of the third lap he was 8th. He finished 6th and took another point.
At the Österreichring in Austria , he qualified 15th and slowly rose up to 8th where he finished the race.
In Holland at Zandvoort, he qualified 8th and finished in 7th.
Then it was time for the Italian Grand-Prix, held at Imola instead of Monza:
The 126C, and the season in a nutshell
Ferrari tested a 126C turbo instead of the T5, without taking the car in the race; Villeneuve qualified in 8th and in the race passed Giacomelli for the 7th place. In the 5th lap a tire exploded from Vittorio Brambilla's car and a lap later in the semi-curve before Tosa, Gilles suffered the same fate, crashing into the wall at 280 km/h (173,1 mp/h) bouncing back into the track; luckily the other drivers avoided Gilles and his wrecked car, and while a little shook, Gilles was unscathed once again.
The place where he crashed was renamed in his honor and his today known as Villeneuve corner.
In Canada, he qualified a terrible 22nd, and in a survival race finished 5th taking his final two points in that season.
The season closed at Watkins Glen, home of the USA Grand-Prix:
Gilles had a curious crash in the practice session but let's let Renè Arnoux tell us what happened:
"I remember that one time at Watkins Glen, I was eating with him at Ferrari and we were arguing over a specific corner; about whether or not it could be taken absolutely flat-out. I could never do it. Every time, my right foot would lift. Then, during free practice, the red flag came out, and I saw Gilles' Ferrari in pretty bad shape, sitting on the tow truck. The wheels had been torn off and the body was heavily damaged, Gilles stopped in front of me and, smiling, he said: -You were right, it doesn't go through flat-out! I tried and it didn't work!-" remembers the French with a laugh.
1981 - RED 27: TO THE WIN IN MONACO AND JARAMA, TO DRIVING BLIND AND CHALLENGING FIGHTER JETS
Gilles 1981 in a nutshell
In 1981, Ferrari presented the 126CK their first car with a turbo powered engine: the iconic 3,0 lt. flat-12 was replaced by a 1,5 lt. six-cylinder displaced in a V at 120°, with turbos supplied by German manufacturer KKK; it can be considered the first proper wing-car made in Maranello, since the ground effect was hugely improved in respect of the 312 T4 and T5 models, however it lacked in the aerodynamics department, where the car was inferior to the competition.
The 126 CK (Competizione KKK) was the model selected instead of the 126 CX (Competizione Comprex) that used instead of KKK turbines a Comprex system that annulled the famous turbo-lag of the first turbo engines.
However, it was found that due to the aggressive accelerations of the car, the inertia produced was so much that it would end destroying the belt that started the system; since Ferrari couldn't cover the developmental costs to engineer a stable solution for racing competition the less complex, but more reliable 126 CK was chosen instead.
The car generated 570 horsepower and had a top speed of 320 km/h (198,8 mp/h).
Along Gilles, a young French was chosen to replace Jody that retired at the end of the previous year, Didier Pironi: sponsored by Marco Piccinini ( the Fiat delegate who had been Ferrari's sport director since 1977 where he subbed for Daniele Audetto), the French had attracted the spotlights in the previous years with solid performances gaining a win and a total of seven podiums.
Like Jody, Pironi was a smoother and more calculative driver and was thought to be the perfect match for a spectacular driver like Gilles.
Gilles welcomed "Didì" with open arms, his teammate spoke French and loved racing, and Gilles wanted Didier to feel at home at Ferrari, becoming best pals soon. The two were inseparable: they both lived in Monte-Carlo, they ate together, they raced each-other not only in racing tracks but even on the highway during the Monte-Carlo to Maranello trip; once they even risked being both arrested and a furious Enzo "impounded" the two Ferrari's of his drivers and gave them scrawny Fiat 124 as a punishment. Gilles fried two of them in less than a month.
The season started at Long Beach for the USA Grand-Prix, with Gilles qualified in 5th in front of Didier in 11th; the race saw Gilles jump from fifth to first at the first turn but he went wide at Queens Hairpin, rejoining in 4th in front of Didier that was 5th.
At the fourth lap he went wide again and lost two positions to Piquet and Pironi before retiring at the 17th lap for a broken transmission; Didier also retired while in 4th at the 63rd lap due to a problem in the alimentation system.
In Brazil, at Jacapareguà, Gilles qualified 7th while Didier struggled in 17th. In the wet race a mistake at the start by Piquet caused a collision between Gilles, Andretti, and Arnoux; Gilles was the only one that could continue the race, but was forced to pit at the 10th lap to change his front wing, broken from the crash at the start. He would retire fifteen laps later due to a turbo issue, while Didier already retired at the 19th lap due to a collision with Alain Prost.
At the Grand-Prix of Argentina, there was drama behind the scene regarding the legality of the Brabham BT49/C and the Lotus 88 that wasn't allowed in the qualifies. Chapman was furious and threatened to retire Lotus from F1.
The Brabham and Ecclestone bended the rules in various forms: Ecclestone sneakily changed a fuel rule where Brabham was allowed to make her own fuel for the race, developing richer and lighter mixtures to gain an advantage in performance; the BT49/C also implemented an hydro-pneumatic suspension that had the role of maximize ground effect and rise up once in the pits avoiding the controls that forbidden cars to sit lower than the 6 centimeters allowed by the rules.
Gilles qualified 7th, Didier 12th: they would both retire in the race, Gilles at the 40th lap due to a transmission problem, Didier at the 3rd lap due to an engine blow.
In the first San Marino Grand-Prix, held at Imola, Gilles qualified on pole and Didier in 6th; before the race had rained and the track was quite humid, Gilles held the lead of the race at the start defending to Carlos Reutemann's attacks before the Argentinian was passed by Didier, that made a lightning start and was 3rd.
It was Gilles in the lead and Didier 2nd; at the 15th lap, Gilles entered the pits to change from wets to the slicks rejoining in 10th place. But it wasn't a good choice and Gilles was back into the pits again three laps later to mount wet tires once again.
Around the 30th lap, Didier had a problem with his car: the right hinge of his car was falling off and didn't guarantee the ground effect working properly; he steadily lost time and positions finishing the race in 5th place, Gilles did a comeback and finished two places down, in 7th.
At Zolder, the rain conditioned the qualifying and no one did better times than the previous day, Friday. Didier was in 3rd place, Gilles 7th; after a little delay made by a strike of mechanics (supported from the drivers too) that were protesting for the sensibilization on the poor safety of their work the race started after a second formation lap and a reposition on the grid due to Nelson Piquet's confusion about the strike ordeal: there was a little bit of chaos since all the time lost made Reutemann's Williams to over-heat and Riccardo Patrese's Arrows to stall; Patrese signaled to abort the start, but it was acnkowledged as a help request, so the Arrows chief engineer jumped from the wall to the behind of Riccardo's car to start the engine again. However the race was started, and even if Patrese and the chief engineer were avoided by many drivers, the other Arrows of Stohr couldn't, crashing into the back of Patrese's car and breaking the legs of Arrows chief-engineer Dave Luckett.
The race was stopped only two laps later, after that Pironi that was leading, saw the confusion and slowed down drastically, stopping the other drivers and causing traffic; once removed the debris and transported Luckett to the hospital, the race restarted without the Arrows; Pironi led until he had a brake problem that made him go wide.
Gilles had a broken spring on the hydro-pneumatic suspension that made his car unstable, Pironi continued his struggle with the brakes losing many positions and spinning once, letting Mansell on the podium. At the end of the race Gilles was 4th, Didier 8th.
It was then time for the Monaco Grand-Prix:
Monaco 1981
Gilles qualified 2nd distanced by 78 milliseconds by the contested poleman Nelson Piquet, Didier was down in 17th after crashing his car. The start was delayed by an hour due to a fire breaking down in the kitchen of the hotel Loews, the hotel that gives the name to the famous hairpin that is the slowest corner in the Circus; the aspirated engines were the favourite in the twisty and narrow streets of Monaco and Piquet held the lead, followed by Gilles that was then passed by Jones on the Williams in the 20th lap.
Piquet then led on Jones duelling with him for quite a few laps, but at the 53rd lap, Piquet tried to lap Eddie Cheever, braking on the dirty side of the track, going wide and crashing into the rail at the Tabac corner, forcing him into retiring.
Jones then gained the lead and had a massive gap to Villeneuve who was still second, however, a faulty fuel pump made Jones slow down: Gilles began to gain and gain, driving like a madman to close the lap to Jones, who had even pitted to put some fuel in the car.
When only four laps remained, Gilles finally passed Jones on the starting line and managed the nerve-wracking four laps that separated him from the win.
But he did it, he did the unthinkable, winning Monaco in a turbo car, while Didier came home in 4th.
The crowd exploded, the Ferrari mechanics were crying tears of joy, Forghieri tried to calm the boys:
"Hey, we won other races. This is not the first one!"
but a mechanic promptly replied,
"Yes, yes engineer! But not as important as this one!"
It was Ferrari and Gilles first victory since Watkins Glen in 1979, it was the first win for a turbo powered car in Monaco.
But the show didn't stop there, after Monaco, it was time for the Spanish Grand-Prix, Jarama:
Jarama 1981
In the qualifying Gilles was 7th, Didier was 13th; at the start, Laffite let the clutch slip and was passed by Jones falling down in 11th, Gilles jumped in 3rd. Jones held the lead of the Grand-Prix until the 14th lap when he made a mistake and went out of the track, Gilles was now leading the Grand-Prix.
And he would hold the lead for 66 laps, driving the best race of his career: Gilles didn't make a single mistake even if he was under constant pressure by the frustrated train behind him that couldn't pass him; exploiting his turbo engine to gain on the straight enough to tenaciously resist the attacks from Laffite, Watson, Reutemann and De Angelis in the twisty section of the track, where his car was the worst of the lot.
He won is sixth and last Grand-Prix in Formula One over the little train of 4 cars that followed him, all of them closed in a second and three-tenths of space. Didier was classified 15th.
If Monaco was great, this would be the most spectacular win of his career.
Enzo Ferrari couldn't resist anymore and finally let out what he thought when he saw Gilles the first time in Fiorano, back in 1977:
"Today, I saw Nuvolari. Gilles drove just like him"
This would be the last joy in a difficult season:
In France, at Dijon, the Ferrari were in trouble; the grip was poor and Gilles fell off the track at 240 km/h ( 149,1 mp/h) and only qualified 11th, Didier was 14th. In the race, Gilles did one of his amazing starts and was in 3rd place in the second lap, however tire troubles left him falling behind in 6th; like in Jarama, a train formed behind Gilles, who held the 6th position until his electrical problems forced him to retire at the 41st lap. Didier finished the Grand-Prix in 5th place.
In Great-Britain, at Silverstone, things didn't go better: Gilles qualified in 8th, Didier in 4th; in the race, he gained 3rd position just behind Didier at the start, but lost the position to Jones when Gilles lost time trying to pass Didier. At the 4th lap, Gilles went off at Woodcote with a spin and although some drivers avoided him, Jones crashed into him, De Cesaris went off and Watson barely saved himself. Gilles tried to go back to the box, but the car was heavily damaged and had both the wings broken, and retired; Didier retired seven laps later due a turbo issue.
In Germany, Gilles qualified again in 8th and Didier was 5th: Didier retired already in the second lap due to electrical problems, Gilles nursed a Ferrari with tire issues to the end, finishing 10th.
In Austria, Gilles qualified 3rd and Didier in 8th: in the race Gilles jumped the Renaults and took the lead in the start, only to go wide trying to resist the attack of Alain Prost at the second lap, rejoining the race in 6th before retiring due to a mistake that took him out of the track on lap 11th. Didier was suffering from back pain due a crash he had friday and was struggling with the tires, blocking other drivers and finishing the race 9th.
The Ferrari was struggling, and at Zandvoort a "Villeneuve" situation happened again.
Zandvoort 1981
I'll borrow Forghieri's words and let him tell the story:
"It's Friday night and we're doing bad, the others were going faster and we couldn't understand what was wrong. If one doesn't have the same speed as the others to compete, its better that he stays at home... ...To have the same speed as the others,we took off even the wings! To the result that not only we didn't get better in the straights, we got worse in the corners. Anyways, the "Old man" (Enzo Ferrari) calls me and says - Look Mauro, we have fixed that engine that we said to test, it seems to go better so I'm sending it to you.- I reply - Commendatore, its Friday night at most the engine will arrive to me tomorrow, what do I do?- -You use it. Tell Gilles that it's better, tell Gilles I said so.- he says, okay. So two poor mechanics start from Maranello in a car Friday night to deliver me the engine, it was a time where there weren't much means, so they arrive Saturday afternoon after the sessions were over. I say okay and tell Gilles - Look Gilles, this and that happened, Commendator Ferrari sent this engine, he says that it's much better, so we don't change you the set-up of the car, we change only the engine putting this one in. But he has recommended that he has no interest for what you can do in the race, he wants to see the engine finishing the race, to judge it- and Gilles goes -Oui, oui, sure, sure, I agree- and I come back to dinner to remind him, because then we lived with the drivers, that stayed with us instead of leaving, it was a family then. So, I came back in the evening to remind him and he was a little annoyed that I continued to tell him these things. Skip to Sunday, we're on the starting grid of the Grand-Prix, I was one of the few that was allowed to stand there next to the car and I remind him once again in French - Do you remember? Do you remember what I told you yesterday?- because Ferrari called once again, and I said to him that we changed the engine but we didn't have time to test it and Ferrari was again like - Tell Gilles that I said so, tell him I'm not interested in the race, I'm interested to see the distance in km/miles the engine does, if it stands the whole race, if the pistons don't break, Mauro make sure to tell him that I said that, don't be an idiot and say that you said that!-...For the love of god, I remind him what Ferrari said once again and Gilles annoyed said - Oui, oui, oui, I understood trust me!- down the helmet, down the visor, 3-2-1 go lights out and I saw him "printed" against the billboard. He passed four cars and he printed himself against the billboard! So, I didn't say anything because I knew him...first thing we get to know is that he's okay...he didn't dare to come to the box!" Forghieri laughs it off " We could see him strolling far from our box!" continues to laugh "He had his motorhome with Joann, Jacques, Melanie and his dog...so in the evening we had dinner together and I told him -Now, its not me who's going to talk and explain this to Enzo...that one it's you!-".
Indeed as Forghieri said, Gilles qualified 16th, passed four cars in the start and then had a crash that forced him to retire. Didier qualified 12th and retired after four laps due a collision with Riccardo Patrese.
Monza was a disaster, Gilles qualified 9th a position behind Didier who was 8th, but Gilles was forced to retire after 5 laps due another turbo issue. Didier finished 5th.
Then it was time for Gilles' home race in Canada:
Can you see something Gilles?
qualified in 11th place alongside Didier that was 12th, Gilles gave a great show in the race; under the heavy rain and after a delayed start Gilles touched Arnoux's Renault that flipped against Pironi: Gilles continued, Arnoux was out, Pironi lost many positions; laps passed and Gilles rose up to 3rd and held the position for twenty and more laps before Watson passed him. Gilles then tried to lap Elio De Angelis, but touched him damaging even more the already damaged front wing. At the 54th lap, his front wing bent behind definetely and Gilles drove practically blind for three laps, when his attempt to weave the car on the straights to detach the stuck wing was successful, he was almost disqualified by the race direction but kept on luckily. He finished a great 3rd without the front wing while Didier was forced to retire at the 24th lap due to injection problems.
The last race of the season was at Caesar's Palace, the track developed on the parking space of the hotel from where the Grand-Prix took his name, for the Las Vegas Grand-Prix. Gilles qualified in 3rd, Didier down in 18th. In the race, Gilles held the second position for a while before being passed by Prost, he retired at the 22nd lap and was disqualified for the wrong position taken at the starting grid.
The 1981 season finished between ups and downs, but there was one more thing that made the fans crazy: Istrana 1981.
Istrana 1981
A drag race was organized between jet-fighters and Formula One cars and tenths of thousands of fans populated the military airport where the race was organized that 21st of November,1981.
Gilles wasn't the only one to try the crazy race, alongside him the world champion Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese with their Brabham and Bruno "Jack'O'Malley" Giacomelli with his Alfa.
When asked about who would win between a jet fighter and an F1, Nelson Piquet swiftly answered "Plane."
Arriving at the airport, Gilles parked the Fiat 500 that he came in the same way he parked his Ferrari 308. Why the 500? Well, remember Enzo impounding the Ferrari's of both Gilles and Didier? Istrana happened during that time.
Against the F104 Starfighter, Gilles would be the fastest of all the other drivers who tried the drag race, winning every drag race against the F104 with his 126CK modified without both front and rear wing to maximize the top speed.
1982 - GILLES AND DIDIER
Didier and Gilles
In 1982 there were all the ingredients to lead the chase to the titles: the two drivers were ready and Gilles was at his peak, the car was finally a beast capable of dominating the season. The 126 C2 was the baby born by the engine design of Mauro Forghieri and the chassis and aero design of brilliant designer Harvey Postlethwaite.
But the season wouldn't really start without drama, it wouldn't be F1: this year center of attention were the "water-cooler brakes" implemented by British teams like Brabham and Williams (and Tyrrell in 1984 with the lead shot instead of water). These brakes featured water tanks for "brake cooling", in reality, it was a way ignore the rules and race under the minimum weight required by the rules; the tanks were spilled or sprayed on the track after the race was started and could be refilled on a pitstop or before the weigh-in, taking back the weight of the car in the limits of the rules.
South Africa 1982
At the first Grand-Prix of the season, Kyalami, a strike was organized by the drivers over the super-license rules. A pajama-party followed in the hotel where all the drivers slept in the same room, singing together and being entertained by Elio De Angelis piano's skills.
Gilles qualified 3rd and Didier was 6th; in the race Gilles retired at the 7th lap, Didier did a good race and retired due a turbo issue after a comeback forced by a change of tires.
In Brazil, Gilles qualified in 2nd while Didier was 8th; Gilles took the lead of the Grand-Prix and held it until he made a mistake while defending on Nelson Piquet on the 30th lap, going out of the track and retiring. Didier finished 6th.
At Long Beach, Gilles qualified 7th and Didier 9th: in the race Gilles would be disqualified after finishing third, dueling along the race with Keke Rosberg, due to the massive rear wing mounted on his 126 C2.
Imola had come:
Betrayal
the British teams forfeited the race as a protest against the FISA, regarding the whole question of the brake cooled brakes; the race was seen then as a showdown between Renault's and the Ferrari's with only 14 cars participating in the race. It was agreed, since the low count of car racing, that the leader would have done some "show" for the paying spectators, overtaking each-other, and the "free all" to the real race was going to happen when half distance of the race was covered.
In Ferrari, preparing to contend the title, it was agreed between the drivers and the team, that the position were to be frozen when the half of the race was covered and that the driver in front had to remain in front, maximizing both WDC and WCC points for the championship.
The first row was locked by the Renault drivers, with Arnoux in pole in front of Prost while Ferrari had locked the second with Gilles in 3rd and Didier in 4th.
The race started and the drivers did the little show, losing Prost due to an engine blow-out at the 6th lap; the positions were frequently exchanged and when half the distance of the race was covered and the 30th lap had come the order was this: in the lead, Gilles, who had passed Arnoux three laps prior, Arnoux and then Pironi. At that point, in the logic of the agreement, Villeneuve had to stay in front and Pironi didn't have to attack him. However Didier attacked and passed Gilles at the 35th lap, with Gilles passing Didier again at the 41st lap; Arnoux retired three laps later, with a smoking engine. Gilles is now leading the Grand-Prix, Didier is 2nd and Michele Alboreto a distant third. At the 45th lap, Marco Piccinini gives the order to expose the "SLOW" signboard; "GIL - SLOW DID - SLOW". However, in that case the slow sign means little or nothing, apart from slowing down the pace to preserve the cars and avoid reliabilty issues. This is confirmed by Mauro Forghieri, absent the day of the race due to a leave he took to attend urgent family business:
"I didn't understand the SLOW. What does SLOW mean in that case? Nothing apart to reduce the pace and bring the cars home, so that none of the two encounters technical problems due to keeping racing and risking. Sometimes I wish I'd never took the day off, I would have exposed a clear sign instead of SLOW, even if it meant to take the responsibility personally over the outcome decision, that was already agreed on between the team and the drivers. 1° GIL 2° DID would have been the sign that I'd put out."
But Didier didn't think that way and passed Gilles, forcing again the full pace instead of preserving the car.
When Gilles was leading his lap times were 1,5-2 seconds slower than the lap times Didier put when he was in the lead.
Not that Gilles was slower than Didier by any means, the little Canadian give 1,3 seconds of pay to his teammate in the qualifying of that race.
Gilles being honest and naive, thought that Didier was still joking and putting a show for a little bit more. Didier was his friend, he was sure that he would gave him the position back and have a laugh about it later. After all, he did the same for Jody at Monza in 1979.
"If I wanted to, I could keep him behind without a problem"
This is what Gilles angrily told when interviewed after the race.
The two kept exchanging positions and the SLOW sign was shown from Ferrari's boxes once again. Gilles, again in the lead, followed the instructions. Didier did not and passed him again. The skirmishes continued, with Gilles even going wide at the exit of Tosa, Didier overtook him again. Gilles took the lead back 2 laps from the end, at the 58th lap passing Didier at Tosa but on the last lap Didier exploited the draft from the Tamburello and passed Gilles again at the Villeneuve, closing the door hard on Tosa.
Didier won, Gilles was second.
The mechanics were confused and less than half of the crowd exploded, the others all understood that something went wrong.
Gilles was furious and felt betrayed, he didn't even want to go on the podium and see his friend face, but was convinced by Jackie Stewart to go up.
War had started between the two, Gilles wouldn't speak to Didier again.
Didier in the interviews affirmed that:
"SLOW didn't mean we couldn't race, it just means to slow down the pace. I think it's okay and fair that I win a race."
Gilles stormed into Ferrari's office asking for explanations, but Enzo iced the conversation saying that a Ferrari had won.
Enzo would regret those word and that decision forever.
But what led to that choice of words?
At the time of the Imola scandal, Gilles was the most famous driver in the Circus, and as some rumors said a "false priest" maybe convinced Enzo that Gilles got too big, too famous and the victories of his wouldn't be thanks to Ferrari, that it was Ferrari that had to be thankful to Gilles and that the solution was already at home, the solution was Didier.
Maybe he convinced the Drake that Gilles being angry was only a spur of the moment and that everything would go back to normal with time or with the next win.
Effectively, there were rumors of some mechanics (but on Piccinini's part) that were jealous of the attention that Gilles got, and those guys supported Didier, that Forghieri says "Was a little slimy and secured himself the support of the team in conjunction with Piccinini."
But the "Forghieri boys" troupe of mechanics (Scaramelli, Iseppi, Corradini) were and still are forever loyal to Gilles.
Then Gilles said that "Ferrari should find another driver to replace me.", and in the following days various rumors of him joining Williams, signing a three-year deal with Ron Dennis to race for McLaren and even a Team Villeneuve founded by Gilles himself followed.
Two weeks of cold war followed and the time of the Belgian Grand-Prix had arrived:
Zolder
Joann and the kids remained at Monaco, preparing for an event that involved Melanie.
Jody Scheckter went with Gilles and tried to calm him without success.
Gilles and Didier continued to not speak to each-other and a timid try from Didier to apologize in front of the team was instantly shut off.
Gilles spent all the qualify sat in the car asking for Didier's times; he wanted to humiliate the traitor that proclaimed himself his friend, going out to do a fast lap whenever Didier time came into his hands.
Didier's best time was a 1:16,505 valid for the 6th place, Gilles best time blinded by fury was a mere tenth slower than Didier's, a 1:16.616 (+0.111) and would have put Gilles 8th in the grid.
Forghieri remembers:
"He had used all of his qualifying tires and did a good lap, not as fast as Didier that was a little quicker, but a good lap.
He asked to go out again, and I told him that we used all the new qualy tires we had...
He just asked for used ones and pretended to go out.
I then told him that he had three laps and I would call him back to the pits, since the tires were already used and there was no chance that they could be faster than new ones anyways.
He got out like a madman and did his lap, again a good lap, a fast one that didn't improve his personal best anyways.
I called him back in the boxes and I don't know if he continued to drive like a madman because he was angry, because he knew that didn't improve and beat Didier.
However I was used to him pushing all-out when doing his out-laps or in-laps, he always pushed to the limit."
A angry Gilles encountered a slow Jochen Mass, and collided.
Gilles flew his last flight.

WHY WAS HE SO LOVED?
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve
Gilles was simply the most genuine and exciting driver in the history of Formula One, and was almost a Don Quixote figure.
One deemed to be not good enough or too mad to drive a Formula One car, it was a person that was humble outside but stayed true to his philosophy of racing: "Always over the limit and never giving up, the fans could relate to him and at the same time be surprised by the little daredevil doing things that the most acclaimed champion didn't dare to do giving his all, in the good and in the bad moments.
"I will miss Gilles for two things: first, he was the fastest driver in the history of motorsport. Second, he was the most genuine man I ever knew. But he's not gone. The memory of what he has done will always remain." - Jody Schecter
" I loved him." - Enzo Ferrari
" I don't think about death, but I accept that its part of the game" - Gilles Villeneuve
"I met only a man with the same car control as Gilles, a man that knew what to do whatever circumstance he was in. His name was Jim Clark." - Chris Amon
"Gilles was brave. He was the toughest bastard you could race and that I ever knew. But he was really fair." -Keke Rosberg
"I always liked Gilles, I liked everything about him, even if I didn't share the risk he took. He was the craziest man I ever met in Formula One." -Niki Lauda
"Gilles was the last great driver. The rest of us are a bunch of good professionals" -Alain Prost
"No human being can do miracles, you know, but Gilles made you wonder." - Jacques Laffite
Salut Gilles.
