Mildly Interesting Trivia: Donald Trump will be the first U.S. President since the franchise’s inception in 1962 to not have a James Bond film released during his presidency.

The James Bond franchise began in 1962, during the Kennedy administration. Since then, every U.S. President has seen at least one James Bond film released during their presidency, from one film during the two and a half year Ford administration, to four during the eight year Reagan administration.
John F. Kennedy - Dr. No, From Russia With Love
Lyndon B. Johnson - Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice
Richard Nixon - On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Diamonds Are Forever, Live And Let Die
Gerald Ford - The Man With The Golden Gun
Jimmy Carter - The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker
Ronald Reagan - For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View To A Kill, The Living Daylights
George H.W. Bush - Licence To Kill
Bill Clinton - GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough
George W. Bush - Die Another Day, Casino Royale, Quantum Of Solace
Barack Obama - Skyfall, Spectre
Donald Trump -
Joe Biden - No Time To Die
Counting unofficial films, Casino Royale (1954) released during the Eisenhower administration, Casino Royale (1967) released during the Johnson administration, and Never Say Never Again released during the Reagan administration.
To be fair, part of this is due to the 007 franchise itself, which took an unusually long time to make a sequel to Spectre; the film could have opened in 2018, the same 3 year gap as the one between Skyfall and Spectre. If No Time To Die was released in its original November 2019 date, or of COVID-19 did not exist and it released in April 2020, Trump would have had a Bond film.
On the other hand, if Trump handled COVID-19 better, No Time To Die could have opened in November 2020 (and if, you know, he wasn't a terrible President, he could have won a 2nd term), and he could have had a Bond film as well.

I think I've finally solved the James Bond 007 film timeline

I, having seen every single Bond movie, spent quite a lot of time researching and putting all this together. And quite frankly, I think this actually works. But feel free to comment on what you think so we could improve this timeline and put this thing to rest once and for all.
The Definitive Bond Timeline
It’s mostly in chronological order by release because many of the films prior to their sequels proceed to confirm that there's a continuity, except the Daniel Craig films where Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace are prequels, Skyfall where he plays an older Bond, and Spectre which completely messes up this whole timeline and gets its own because of it. We’ll talk about that later.
1.) Casino Royale (2006) Reason: James Bond is now a 00 agent. 2.) Quantum of Solace Reason: Direct sequel to Casino Royale (2006) 3.) Dr. No 4.) From Russia With Love Reason: Spectre wants revenge for Dr. No’s death 5.) Goldfinger 6.) Thunderball 7.) You Only Live Twice 8.) On Her Majesty’s Secret Service Reason: Bond’s still on the hunt for Blofeld and Spectre 9.) Diamonds are Forever Reason: Bond wants revenge for the ruthless murder of his wife, Tracey Bond. 10.) Live and Let Die 11.) The Man with the Golden Gun Reason: The return of Sheriff J.W. Pepper (who made an appearance in Live and Let Die) 12.) The Spy Who Loved Me Reason: Tracey Bond is subtly mentioned. 13.) Moonraker Reason: The return the greatest iconic henchman in film and the 007 franchise, Jaws (who made an appearance in Live and Let Die). 14.) Never Say Never Again [it is unofficial, but it does work in the canon timeline] Reason: We have an older Sean Connery playing a James Bond one more time and Blofeld is still alive. 15.) For Your Eyes Only Reason: We see Bond next to the grave of Tracey Bond at the beginning of the film. Blofeld is killed. 16.) Octopussy 17.) A View To A Kill 18.) The Living Daylights 19.) License To Kill Reason: Tracey Bond is subtly mentioned as well, but also becomes a driving motive for Bond to go after and kill Franz Sanchez when Sanchez nearly kills Felix Leiter (Bond’s very close friend who shows up in many previous Bond films) and get s Felix’s wife murdered. 20.) Goldeneye Reason: Tracey Bond is subtly mentioned by Alec. 21.) Tomorrow Never Dies 22.) The World is Not Enough Reason: Tracey Bond is subtly mentioned once again. 23.) Die Another Day Reason: We see many gadgets from previous films and now have a new Q. 24.) Skyfall Reason: Bond is old and sick of his job, we get, and yet again, another new Q as well there references to previous gadgets.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Spectre (Secondary) Timeline
Because of Spectre *cough* *cough* *cough*, it makes it practically impossible for it to even fit in the canon timeline and it messes it all up because while it’s a sequel to Skyfall, it’s supposedly the first time Bond meets Ernst Blofeld. HOWEVER, Daniel Craig plays an older Bond in both Skyfall and Spectre but already met Blofeld for the first time in You Only Live Twice. Not only this but Blofeld shows up face-to-face with Bond in (of course...) YOLT, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (let’s just assume that Tracy Bond was killed some other way that doesn’t involve Bond meeting Blofeld), Diamonds are Forever, and For Your Eyes Only. So with this in mind, this timeline should fix this issue by, unfortunately, leaving out all these films where Blofeld makes an appearance or is mentioned… Honestly, it’s the only way this makes sense and you should take it with a grain of salt because the only issue I want you guys to help me out with is whether other not all the movies involving Spectre prior to Spectre (the movie), which is all the Sean Connery movies on here except Goldfinger, should stay on here or not.
1.) Casino Royale (2006) 2.) Quantum of Solace 3.) Dr. No 4.) From Russia With Love 5.) Goldfinger 6.) Thunderball 7.) Live and Let Die 8.) The Man with the Golden Gun 9.) The Spy Who Loved Me 10.) Moonraker 11.) Octopussy 12.) A View To A Kill 13.) The Living Daylights 14.) License To Kill 15.) Goldeneye 16.) Tomorrow Never Dies 17.) The World is Not Enough 18.) Die Another Day 19.) Skyfall 20.) Spectre
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Casino Royale (1967) [Not Official] takes place in Timeline #3
Reason: Not only is there more than one James Bond agent, which makes it the only film that confirms the James Bond codename theory, but everyone literally dies at the end of the movie after a nuclear weapon is detonated. So while you could’ve just put this as the last film in the canon timeline, it arguably doesn’t work because Skyfall debunked this codename theory.

Casino Royale (1954) [Not Official] takes place in Timeline #4
Reason: The iconic British agent is not the James Bond we come to know and love in this first on-screen adaptation movie of Ian Fleming’s novels, but rather, Jimmy Bond who works for the CIA.

The name's Free For All. Weekend Free For All.

I'll add in something clever about James Bond later when I'm not scanning patients.
Trivia fact: Did you know that Sean Connery wasn't the first 007 on screen? That honor goes to Barry Nelson in the 1954 TV version of Casino Royale, playing an American spy called Jimmy by his friends. The villain was Le Chiffre, played by the incomparable Peter Lorre.
EDIT: Help. How do I turn off inbox replies on Relay for Reddit?
EDIT 2: There will be no clever edit about James Bond. Sorry. Also check out the IRC channel, #rarmy on irc.rizon.net.

[Theme: Action] #2. Goldfinger (1964)

Introduction

The phenomenon of 007 is something that can't be ignored when observing the development of the Action genre, and despite the recent trend of franchises and sequels, James Bond is still arguably the most popular movie charactebrand in the world. While Hitchcock's influence over the beginning entries of the franchise is undeniable, North by Northwest is not actually the only Hitchcock entry linked to Bond; The 1st screen appearance of 007 came in 1954 as a 1hr TV adaptation of Casino Royale, written by Charles Bennett who also wrote a number of Hitchcock scripts, including spy thrillers like The 39 Steps (1935) and Sabotage (1936). The episode was forgotten almost immediately, and it would take the success of NxNW for 007 to get his second shot in Hollywood.
After producers Albert "Cubby" Broccoli and Harry Saltzman established Eon Productions in 1961 their 1st ploy was to try to recreate the Hitchcock-Grant partnership; when that didn't pan out, they set their sights lower hoping to create a stable crew which would help the development of a series. The result was Terence Young and Sean Connery, and while the Bond franchise is typically seen as governed by the producers rather than directors, this is a notable exception; Much like John Wayne's adoption of Yakima Canutt's cowboy persona, Connery's 007 is very much an imitation of Young's demeanor, the result of the director taking it upon himself to introduce the young actor to the social circles Bond frequently finds himself navigating.
Dr. No and From Russia With Love both achieved financial success, mainly in Europe. With an eye towards the American market, Goldfinger began production in 1963.
Hitchcock once said to me, ‘If I have 13 “bumps” I know I have a picture.’ By ‘bumps’, he meant, of course, shocks, highpoints, thrills, whatever you choose to call them. From the beginning...Mr Broccoli and Mr Saltzman, the producers, and myself have not been content with 13 ‘bumps’. We aim for 39. Our objective has been to make every foot of film pay off in terms of exciting entertainment. - Richard Maibaum
These 'bumps' had became much easier to achieve with the gradual loosening of censorship restrictions, to the point where Goldfinger has perhaps the most transparently sexually named female character in film history (not that they've stopped trying to top it). While several elements of the Bond formula were already present beforehand, Goldfinger is perhaps the distillation of it: The high-class villain, eccentric henchmen, the gadgets, elaborate sets and exotic locations, sacrificial women, and of course...

The Car

You'll be using this Aston Martin DB5 with modifications. Now, pay attention please. - Q
The Bond car is perhaps the most satisfying film embodiment of Chekov's Gun principle, and none more iconically so than the 1964 DB5. Despite Bond's now famous association with Aston Martin, it wasn't a certain deal at the beginning. Bond's original vehicle in the books was a Bentley Blower, and Ian Fleming was persuaded to upgrade him to the DB3 while writing Goldfinger.
So, how do you obtain a car to film? Buy it? Hell no, producers hate spending money. In typical fashion, they asked Aston Martin for a free DB5, and in equally typical fashion Aston responded that the car was available...for full retail price. At this point, other brands were considered...Jaguar, Jensen...Chevrolet (really?!). Eventually, for the benefit of Western Civilization, the producers were able to procure a test mule DB5 and proceeded to spend £25,000 installing all the gadgetry, 5 times the asking price of the car. A worthwhile investment then, because the blowout success of Goldfinger ensured Bond's survival, and despite the many imitators through the decades, the iconic teaming of Aston Martin and 007 remains the one to beat.

Feature Presentation

Goldfinger, d. by Guy Hamilton, written by Richard Maibaum, Paul Dehn
Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe, Honor Blackman, Shirley Eaton, Harold Sakata
1964, IMDb
James Bond saves World, gets Pussy.

Legacy

The 1st Bond to win an Academy Award, and the fasting grossing film of its time. The Goldfinger formula has since been adopted by the subsequent Bond films, as well as a host of other action films.
The famous laser effect was achieved optically in post-production. However, that didn't make filming the scene any easier for Connery, as the cutting effect was the result of a crewmember holding a blowtorch underneath the metal table, inching slowly towards his manhood...

Aktor Pemeran James Bond - Part 1

Take a Letter and Blockbusters.

Roger Moore 1964

LIVE AND LET DIE (book, not movie)

From 1954, this was the second book by Ian Fleming and the beginning of the actual James Bond series. CASINO ROYALE is essentially the origin story of 007 and different in both structure and focus from the rest of the books. Here is where many if not all of the elements of the remaining adventures are introduced.
I suspect that LIVE AND LET DIE is one of the least read today of the original canon (or at least the one fewest readers finish), largely because modern readers are offended or dismayed at the "Negro" dialect which Fleming uses for his characters and many readers never get past the part where Bond and Leiter mount an expedition into 1953 Harlem. Well, be that as it may, please don't get bogged down in this one unfortunate aspect and you should enjoy a thriller which is fast-moving, inventive and full of creative energy.
CASINO ROYALE had been essentially a one-shot, the story of an crucial episode in the life of a tough secret agent. With LIVE AND LET DIE, Fleming accepted the idea of further adventures for his hero and took the chance to vicariously act out some of his lifelong dreams. The book burns with enthusiasm. Through James Bond, the author retells his own trips to New York City, Florida and the Cariibbean but places his observations in the context of an adventure story. This is the formula which Fleming will use skillfully for the rest of his career.
Bond in this second book is much more likeable and open. His friendship with Felix Leiter suddenly seems completely believable and much warmer than in CASINO ROYALE, which makes the American agent's ordeal that much harder to take. The scene where Bond finds the nearly lifeless body in a bloodsoaked sheet, with a heartless taunting note left "in a gap in the bandages where the mouth should have been", haunts both him and the reader for the rest of the book.
One aspect from CASINO ROYALE which quickly faded was Bond's personal vendetta against SMERSH. In the first book, his torture at the hands of Le Chiffre and the suicide of Vesper had left him with a real desire to crusade against the Russian spy system. In LIVE AND LET DIE, he's still on a crusade, eager for M "to start him on his trail of revenge." Bond has had the Russian letter standing for the word Spion (spy) removed from the back of his hand where the SMERSH killer had carved it with a stiletto but he still carries the wounded pride and resentment.
M sends him after Mr Big, an American gangster who is a member of SMERSH. This first great supervillain has almost too many things going for him. First, he's a wealthy criminal who owns several nightclubs and a string of brothels. He's a smuggler who has devised an intricate system for bringing millions of dollars worth of gold into the USA from the Caribbean (it's the fabulous lost treasure of Morgan the pirate). He's a traitor who is working for his country's archenemy in the most bitter days of the Cold War. He's a megalomaniac genius who is obsessed with the technical brilliance and artistry of his crimes. And as if all that wasn't enough, he is the head of a vast Voodoo cult he rules with terror and murder, posing as the actual Zombie of the dread Baron Samedi. Jeez! And Bond's reaction is basically, "Let me at him!"
(I am amazed at how many people think the James Bond books were just ordinary spy thrillers. With villains like this guy and their wild schemes, these books are the heirs to the great pulp adventure of twenty years earlier.)
Felix Leiter makes a return appearance and Bond is glad to have him as a guide to America. The two men are so compatible despite their different attitudes and backgrounds that they make a natural partnership; whenever Leiter shows up in the later books, he perks Bond and the story up immensely. There's also Quarrel, the Cayman Islander, whom Bond likes immediately and who trains him for his final assault on Mr Big's voodoo island. Quarrel has that warm personality and deep experience of life (as opposed to mere scholarship) that Bond admires and respects whenever he finds it.
Solitaire, though, never really comes to life for me on the page. Mr Big has been using her as a psychic lie detector to help him interogate people. Literally the moment she meets our hero, Solitaire tumbles like a rock down a hill for him and decides to run away from the murderous ganglord who has thousands on his payroll, to be with Bond. This isn't as hard to believe as you might think, because she is telepathic after all, and she immediately knows he`s the one man who can give her sexual bliss rescue her from that life. But her personality never quite gels and she remains (for me, at least) just a sketch.
The action is pretty violent and Mike Hammer gets some competition in the tough guy game from his English counterpart. When Bond is taken prisoner by Mr Big and has his little finger slowly broken as a punishment for his impertinence, our boy shows why he's a 00 agent by leaving a trail of dead thugs behind him as he escapes. When he hunts down the man who mutilated Leiter, he also gets some of that revenge he was craving. And Mr Big himself suffers a disturbing fate that, even if he richly deserves it, would be hard to watch in person. (Not too many of Bond's opponents are taken away in handcuffs to later escape and return in the next book.)
But along with the fear and carnage and cold sweat is the sunnier flip side of Fleming's world. When he's writing about things he enjoys, whether diving in Jamaican waters or riding luxury trains or savoring a good meal, Fleming has a gift for sharing this enthusiasm with the reader. It's too bad that to earn all the beautiful girlfiends and weeks in the Caribbean and gourmet meals, Bond has to put up with things like being dragged naked over sharp coral behind a boat, but hey, everything has a price.

Bond Movie Of The Week: Casino Royale (2006)

In this week's edition of BMOTW Bond we are witnessing Bond's inception as double-oh agent.
This week's BMOTW is Casino Royale the movie that is marked as 007 reboot starting Daniel Craig as Bond, but it's not the first try of ecranisation of the the first novel about 007 by Ian Fleming.
The 2 other "Casino Royales" are the one starting Barry Nelson as Bond from 1954 and the second one is a 007 parody from 1967 with couple of guys portraying the role of Bond (see the movie and you'll understand).
So after we've got that out of the way let's talk about the 2006 version. This movie is the "official" adaptation of Ian Fleming's first book about 007 which is the reason we are right now right here talking about the suave agent with code name 007. After some problems with the studio MGM finally decided to make the 21st Bond movie adaptation of the book but they needed a Bond after Pierce Brosnan became too old (for someone) to play Bond. They needed a younger Bond and they needed a new Bond for the new generation. They needed someone that will help MGM to bring back Bond, and to did that with a bang.
And so he did. He was 38 old English actor going by the name of Craig.Daniel Craig. This decision was really controversial and many fans thought that Craig doesn't fit the fit the mold that made Bond. That he might be good actor but he is not Bond. "A blond haired Bond? Monstrosity !" There was even a site CraigIsNotBond.com (I'm not really sure if that was the URL of the site) made by irritated Bond fans.
After 7 years some of the fans learned to live with the fact that Craig is Bond and some even love him as a Bond. But however there are still some fans how don't like Craig as Bond.
The movie did it's job perfectly. It brought Bond back in the game in great fashion. Casino Royale was hit, most of the old fans liked the movie, and immediately after seeing the movie new fans were born.
The movie as already mentioned stars Daniel Craig as Bond, Eva Green as the controversial Vesper Lynd, Judi Dench as M and for the first time a black guy portrayed Bond's american friend-Felix Leither. Jeffrey Wright was Leighter in this movie and IMO he did a solid job, and the fact that there weren't many unhappy fans about the fact that black guy played Leither proves it.
The villain in the movie is played by the brilliant Mads Mikkelsen who is one of the guys who in my opinion deserve more recognition. Casino Royale gave him that popularity, and rightfully so. Mads Mikkelsen (you can check NBC for his portrayal of the iconic Hannibal btw) was great as the rich and sinister Le Chiffre.
The official James Bond 007 page decided to make a survey before SkyFall to let the fans determine the best Bond movie in their opinion and Casino Royale won. Do you share their opinion? Write your review about Casino Royale and your rating for Die Another Day bellow.
And now let's see how you've rated (one of ) my fave Bond movie The World Is Not Enough

Besides giving your rating for Die Another Day don't forget to sum up your thoughts about Bond's rebirth in Casino Royale.

Bond Movies Of The Week: "Unofficial Bond movies"

James Bond is the highest grossing franchise of all time.
It is a franchise that has following throughout the entire world.
The novels by Ian Fleming, became a global phenomenon. The franchise about 007 inspired many young authors to start writing books, to dream that one day they will act in a Bond movie, even to spoof the world's most famous agent. Throughout the 50 years of Bond we've seen many parodies of the Bond movies, and many movies that were inspired by the majesty's agent.
But 3 movies will always be remembered as the movies that are the "bastard child" of the franchise. Bond movies that are not actually Bond movies. Bond movies that did not had the support by MGM, and movies that are really controversial. (while we are at the subject of controversy I would like to mention that throughout the 50years of Bond as we know it, MGM had many issues with the rights of Bond, and there were couple of Bond movies that were never made, but these 3 actually made it).
It all starts in 1954 with the first ecranisation of Fleming's first novel about 007. Casino Royale starring Barry Nelson Jimmy/James Bond.
If you haven't seen this episode/movie than you can check it out on YouTube by simply clicking at this link.
The Daniel Craig and Nelson were not the only actors to portray Bond in a Bond movie called "Casino Royale". In 1967 a parody/comedy version of Fleming's novel even gets an Oscar nomination for the movie named "Casino Royale" and it has Peter Sellers, Ursula Anders, David Niven, Dalliah Lavi, Terence Cooper, and even Woody Allen playing the role of Mr. Bond. I know that this sounds crazy to you but in the movie it makes sense, so you should check that one out if you want to see the "official" James Bond parody.
The most famous "unofficial" (or non-MGM) Bond movie is Never Say Never Again, and it has the original James Bond, Sean Connery in the role that brought him fame- Agent 007. Unlike the previous 2 movies this is more of an actual James Bond movie than the both versions of Casino Royale.
This will be a special week for BMOTW series cause instead of one you get to rate 4 (!!) Bond movies.
In the comment section bellow leave your ratings for SkyFall, Casino Royale (1954), Casino Royale (1967), and Never Say Never Again.
You can also write your review and your thoughts about the 3 Bond movies of the week.
If you haven't seen the 3 "unofficial" Bond movies you can see Casino Royale (1954): here.
And you can purchase video/BluRay/DVD of Casino Royale (1967):
here, here, and here
For Never Say Never Again just click here, here, or here.
And now it's time to see how did you rate Quantum Of Solace last week:
# Rating Name of Movie
1. 9.5 Casino Royale (2006)
2. 9.2 GoldFinger
3. 8.7 GoldenEye
4. 8.6 Licence To Kill
5. 8.4 The Living Daylights
6. 8.2 From Russia With Love
7. 8.2 The Spy Who Loved Me
8. 8.2 Dr.No
9. 8.0 For Your Eyes Only
10. 7.8 ThunderBall
11. 7.6 On Her Majesty's Secret Service
12. 7.3 You Only Live Twice
13. 7.2 Live And Let Die
14. 6.2 Quantum Of Solace
15. 6.2 The Man With The Golden Gun
16. 5.6 The World Is Not Enough
17. 5.6 A View To A Kill
18. 5.6 Tomorrow Never Dies
19. 5.1 MoonRaker
20. 4.6 Octopussy
21. 4.2 Diamonds Are Forever
22. 2.3 Die Another Day
Kind of surprisingly but Quantum Of Solace with a score of 6,2 gets the (un)lucky 13th spot in the list.
Do you think that any of the last 4 movies in the series can make major stir ups in the list ? Are the "unofficial" Bond movies the worst? Is the newest Bond the best? Follow our threads to find out.
Note: If most of you haven't seen the 3 movies mentioned in the thread, and think that it will take longer than a week (for any reason) to see all 3 movies, we will have another BMOTW next week, if not next week we will have our grand BMOTW finale where we will see the final results of this series.
I hope that you are enjoying this series, and as always whatever you are doing stay safe and Bond on.

Literary 007: Live And Let Die

The "Literary 007" series is back. Last month you had the chance to talk about the first novel about 007-"Casino Royale".
Now it is time to continue with the second book in the series of novels about world's most famous spy. That novel is Live and Let Die.
Live and Let Die is the second novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series, first published in the UK by Jonathan Cape on 5 April 1954, where the initial print run of 7,500 copies quickly sold out. As with Fleming's first novel, Casino Royale, Live and Let Die was broadly well received by the critics. The novel was written at Fleming's 'Goldeneye' estate in Jamaica before Casino Royale was published and much of the background came from Fleming's own experiences of travel in the US and his knowledge of Jamaica itself.
Following an adaptation in 1958–59 by John McLusky in the Daily Express in comic strip format, the novel was adapted in 1973 as the eighth 'official' film in the Eon Productions Bond series and the first to star Roger Moore as James Bond. Major plot elements from the novel were also incorporated into two other Bond films: For Your Eyes Only, released in 1981 and Licence to Kill, released in 1989.
