Ahsoka After making her long-awaited, live-action debut in The Mandalorian, Ahsoka Tano’s story, written by Dave Filoni, will continue in a limited series, Ahsoka, starring Rosario Dawson and executive produced by Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau. Rangers of the New Republic Set within the timeline of The Mandalorian, Rangers of the New Republic is a new live-action series from executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni that will intersect with future stories and culminate into a climactic story event. Andor Andor, a tense nail-biting spy thriller created by Tony Gilroy, is set to arrive on Disney+ in 2022. Diego Luna, reprising the role of rebel spy Cassian Andor from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will be joined by a fantastic new cast that includes Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller and Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma. Obi-Wan Kenobi Ewan McGregor returns in the iconic role of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi for a special event series on Disney+. Officially titled Obi-Wan Kenobi, the series begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where he faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader. The series is directed by Deborah Chow, who helmed memorable episodes of The Mandalorian Season 1, and features the return of Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader. The Bad Batch The Bad Batch follows the elite and experimental clones of the Bad Batch (first introduced in The Clone Wars) as they find their way in a rapidly changing galaxy in the immediate aftermath of the Clone War. Members of Bad Batch—a unique squad of clones who vary genetically from their brothers in the Clone Army—each possess a singular exceptional skill that makes them extraordinarily effective soldiers and a formidable crew. In the post-Clone War era, they will take on daring mercenary missions as they struggle to stay afloat and find new purpose. This animated series will arrive exclusively on Disney+. Star Wars: Visions Presenting all-new, creative takes on the galaxy far, far away, Star Wars: Visions will be a series of animated short films celebrating Star Wars through the lens of the world’s best anime creators. A Droid Story As Lucasfilm continues to develop new stories, the intersection of animation and visual effects offers new opportunities to explore. Lucasfilm Animation is teaming up with Lucasfilm’s visual effects team, Industrial Light & Magic, to develop a special Star Wars adventure film for Disney+, A Droid Story. This epic journey will introduce us to a new hero, guided by legendary duo R2-D2 and C-3PO. Willow Willow, set decades after Ron Howard’s 1988 movie, continues the spirit of adventure, heroics and humor of the original film in this new series debuting on Disney+ in 2022. Warwick Davis will return in the role of the great sorcerer, Willow Ufgood, with Jon Chu (director of the groundbreaking Crazy Rich Asians) directing the pilot.

The pair, who came together in the final moments of Avengers: Endgame, team up on a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience. Directed by Kari Skogland with Malcolm Spellman serving as head writer, the six-episode series also stars Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker. Loki Loki is set to debut on Disney+ in May 2021 featuring the God of Mischief as he steps out of his brother’s shadow in a new series that takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Secret Invasion Secret Invasion is a newly announced series heading to Disney+ that stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos—characters who first met in Captain Marvel. The crossover comic event series showcases a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years. Ironheart Ironheart, the second of the newly announced series coming to Disney+, stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, a genius inventor who creates the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man. Armor Wars Armor Wars, based on the classic Marvel comic series, comes to Disney+ starring Don Cheadle as James Rhodes aka War Machine who must face what happens when Tony Stark’s tech falls into the wrong hands. Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, slated for Disney+ during the 2022 holiday season, is written and directed by Guardians of the Galaxy veteran James Gunn. Inside Pixar Inside Pixar is a new documentary series that invites Pixar fans into the studio for an up-close, never-before- seen look at the artistry, craftsmanship and storytellers behind beloved films. The first five episodes are currently available on Disney+ with more scheduled to release soon. Soul Soul, available exclusively on Disney+ beginning December 25, 2020, explores themes like appreciating the simple joys of life and finding one’s unique spark. Directed by Docter, the film introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx), a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voice of Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions. Soul is co-directed by Kemp Powers (One Night in Miami) and produced by Academy Award nominee Dana Murray, p.g.a. (Pixar short Lou). Burrow Burrow is part of Pixar’s collection of shorts called SparkShorts that are created by a diverse group of storytellers. Debuting exclusively on Disney+ on December 25, 2020, Burrow features a young rabbit who embarks on a journey to dig the burrow of her dreams, despite not having a clue what she’s doing. Rather than reveal to her neighbors her imperfections, she digs herself deeper and deeper into trouble. After hitting (bed)rock bottom, she learns there is no shame in asking for help. The new short is directed by Madeline Sharafian and produced by Mike Capbarat. Pixar Popcorn Pixar Popcorn, coming to Disney+ in January 2021, is a collection of mini shorts featuring Pixar characters in all-new, bite-size stories created by Pixar’s talented animators. Dug Days Dug Days, which premieres exclusively on Disney+ in Fall 2021, is a new collection of shorts that follows the humorous misadventures of Dug, the lovable dog from Disney and Pixar’s Up. Each short features everyday events that occur in and around Dug’s backyard, all through the exciting (and delightfully distorted) eyes of our favorite talking dog. The shorts are written and directed by Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Bob Peterson and produced by Kim Collins. Cars Cars, coming to Disney+ in Fall 2022, is an all-new series that follows Lightning McQueen and his best friend Mater on a cross-country road trip. These episodes are filled with lots of fun new characters, imaginative destinations as well as old friends checking in along the way. The series is written by Steve Purcell and produced by Marc Sondheimer. Win or Lose Win or Lose, Pixar’s first-ever original long-form animated series, debuts on Disney+ in 2023. It follows a coed middle school softball team in the week leading up to their championship game. Each 20-minute episode highlights the perspective of a different character and explores the drama of bad calls made on and off the field. Written and directed by story artists Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates, and produced by David Lally, Win or Lose is a comedy about love, rivalry and the challenges we all face in our struggle to win at life.

Hocus Pocus 2 Hocus Pocus 2, exclusively on Disney+, is the spooky sequel to the 1993 Halloween cult classic Hocus Pocus. Adam Shankman is set to direct. Three Men and a Baby Three Men and a Baby, a modern take on the hilarious ’80s comedy, will star Zac Efron and is slated for a 2022 release on Disney+. Safety Safety, premiering tomorrow, December 11, on Disney+, is a drama inspired by the empowering story of former Clemson University football safety Ray McELrathBey, a young man facing a series of challenging circumstances, whose dedication and persistence help him to triumph over repeated adversities. Marshall director Reginald Hudlin helms the uplifting drama. The Keanon Lowe project The Keanon Lowe project, coming to Disney+, is inspired by the incredible real-life story of a high school coach who averted tragedy through compassion. Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia are on board as producers for the project through their Seven Bucks Productions. Greek Freak Greek Freak heads into production next year for Disney+. It is the remarkable story of NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and his family, who lifted themselves out of poverty as undocumented immigrants living in Greece. Ultimately, Giannis finds himself on the world stage. The Chris Paul Project The Chris Paul project is a biographical film in development for Disney+ about NBA superstar Chris Paul. It follows Paul’s deeply moving story of family, legacy and destiny that helped make him who he is today. Flora & Ulysses Flora & Ulysses is a delightful comedy-adventure based on the Newbery Award–winning book about 10-year-old Flora, an avid comic book fan and a self-avowed cynic, who rescues a squirrel with unique superhero powers. Flora & Ulysses stars Matilda Lawler and is directed by Lena Khan (The Tiger Hunter). The film makes its debut on Disney+ February 19, 2021. Cheaper by the Dozen Cheaper by the Dozen, a reimagining of the hit comedy with Black-ish producer Kenya Barris, will air on Disney+ in 2022. The story centers on a multiracial, blended family of 12, navigating a hectic home life while managing their family business. Gabrielle Union is set to star. Diary of a Wimpy Kid Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which has spawned a successful live-action film franchise from the popular books, comes to Disney+ in 2021 as an all-new animated film. The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, exclusively for Disney+, is a spin-off of the popular Ice Age franchise from 20th Century Studios. The story centers on three series favorites: the prankster possum brothers Crash and Eddie, and the swashbuckling titular weasel, Buck. Simon Pegg will be returning in the role of Buck. The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild is slated for an early 2022 release. Night at the Museum Night at the Museum comes to Disney+ with a new twist: this time it’s animated. Shawn Levy, who has helped shape the blockbuster franchise as director of the previous films, and is also helming 20th Century Studios’ upcoming Free Guy, is on board as a producer. Night at the Museum launches on Disney+ in 2021. Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers, a hybrid live-action-animated feature for Disney+, is in development. Akiva Schaffer (Popstar) directs, and John Mulaney and Andy Samberg are set to star in the title roles with Seth Rogen doing a cameo. Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers is slated for spring 2022. Pinocchio Pinocchio is coming to Disney+ in a compelling new live-action retelling that will leverage state-of-the art CGI to bring Pinocchio to life. A living puppet, with the help of a cricket as his conscience, must prove himself worthy to become a real boy in a musical remake of the Disney animated classic. Robert Zemeckis directs and Tom Hanks stars. Peter Pan & Wendy Peter Pan & Wendy, inspired by the Disney animated classic, has David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon) at the helm. A young girl rebels against “growing up” by going with her two brothers to a magical land ruled by an ageless boy obsessed with adventure who is locked in an ongoing battle with a pirate captain. The cast includes Jude Law as Captain Hook and Yara Shahidi (Grown-ish) in the role of Tinker Bell. The film will premiere on Disney+. Disenchanted Disenchanted, a sequel to the hit film Enchanted, will stream exclusively on Disney+. Amy Adams returns as Giselle, who found her life flipped upside down when she fell out of her animated fantasy world and discovered herself stuck in real-life Manhattan. Sister Act 3 Sister Act 3, the third film in the beloved Sister Act series, is in development. Whoopi Goldberg is on board to star and produce, with Tyler Perry also signed on as a producer on the project. Sister Act 3 will premiere on Disney+.

Raya and the Last Dragon Raya and the Last Dragon, which will be released on March 5, 2021, simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access, travels to the fantasy world of Kumandra, where humans and dragons lived together long ago in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. Raya and the Last Dragon features the voices of Kelly Marie Tran as Raya, a warrior whose wit is as sharp as her blade, and Awkwafina as magical, mythical, self-deprecating dragon named Sisu. Newly revealed characters from the film include a street-savvy 10-year-old entrepreneur named Boun, the formidable giant Tong, and a thieving toddler Noi with her band of Ongis. The feature film is directed by Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada and produced by Osnat Shurer and Peter Del Vecho. Baymax Baymax, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ first-ever animated series, takes place in the fantastical city of San Fransokyo and features fan favorite healthcare bot, Baymax. Created by Don Hall, the Oscar-winning director of Big Hero 6, Baymax premieres on Disney+ in early 2022. Zootopia+ Zootopia+ heads back to the fast-paced mammal metropolis of Zootopia in a short-form series directed by Trent Correy and Josie Trinidad. Zootopia+ dives deeper into the lives of some of the feature film’s most intriguing characters, including Fru Fru, the newly married arctic shrew; Gazelle’s talented tiger dancers; and the sloth full of surprises, Flash. The short-form series debuts on Disney+ in Spring 2022. Iwájú Iwájú is an all-new original series coming to Disney+ in 2022. The series is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African comic book entertainment company Kugali and its founders Tolu Olowofoyeku, Ziki Nelson and Hamid Ibrahim. Iwájú, which roughly translates to “The Future” in the Yoruba language, is steeped in science fiction. The long-form series is set in Lagos, Nigeria, exploring deep themes of class, innocence and challenging the status quo. Says director Ziki Nelson, “This show will combine Disney’s magic and animation expertise with Kugali’s fire and storytelling authenticity. Iwájú represents a personal childhood dream of mine to tell my story and that of my people.” Tiana Tiana, coming to Disney+ in 2023, is a long-form musical-comedy series featuring the extraordinary entrepreneur who’s now princess of the kingdom Maldonia. The all-new adventures explore both Maldonia and Tiana’s beloved hometown, New Orleans. Tiana is the first princess to have her own Walt Disney Animation Studios series. Moana, The Series Moana, The Series, coming to Disney+ in 2023, is a new long-form musical series that follows spirited voyager Moana as she ventures far beyond the reef. Soul Soul, available exclusively on Disney+ beginning December 25, 2020, explores themes like appreciating the simple joys of life and finding one’s unique spark. Directed by Docter, the film introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx), a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voice of Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions. Burrow Burrow is part of Pixar’s collection of shorts called SparkShorts that are created by a diverse group of storytellers. Debuting exclusively on Disney+ on December 25, 2020, Burrow features a young rabbit who embarks on a journey to dig the burrow of her dreams, despite not having a clue what she’s doing. Rather than reveal to her neighbors her imperfections, she digs herself deeper and deeper into trouble. After hitting (bed)rock bottom, she learns there is no shame in asking for help. The new short is directed by Madeline Sharafian and produced by Mike Capbarat. Pixar Popcorn Pixar Popcorn, coming to Disney+ in January 2021, is a collection of mini shorts featuring Pixar characters in all-new, bite-size stories created by Pixar’s talented animators. Dug Days Dug Days, which premieres exclusively on Disney+ in Fall 2021, is a new collection of shorts that follows the humorous misadventures of Dug, the lovable dog from Disney and Pixar’s Up. Each short features everyday events that occur in and around Dug’s backyard, all through the exciting (and delightfully distorted) eyes of our favorite talking dog. The shorts are written and directed by Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Bob Peterson and produced by Kim Collins. Cars Cars, coming to Disney+ in Fall 2022, is an all-new series that follows Lightning McQueen and his best friend Mater on a cross-country road trip. These episodes are filled with lots of fun new characters, imaginative destinations as well as old friends checking in along the way. The series is written by Steve Purcell and produced by Marc Sondheimer. Win or Lose Win or Lose, Pixar’s first-ever original long-form animated series, debuts on Disney+ in 2023. It follows a coed middle school softball team in the week leading up to their championship game. Each 20-minute episode highlights the perspective of a different character and explores the drama of bad calls made on and off the field. Safety Safety, premiering tomorrow, December 11, on Disney+, is a drama inspired by the empowering story of former Clemson University football safety Ray McELrathBey, a young man facing a series of challenging circumstances, whose dedication and persistence help him to triumph over repeated adversities. Marshall director Reginald Hudlin helms the uplifting drama. The Keanon Lowe project The Keanon Lowe project, coming to Disney+, is inspired by the incredible real-life story of a high school coach who averted tragedy through compassion. Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia are on board as producers for the project through their Seven Bucks Productions. Greek Freak Greek Freak heads into production next year for Disney+. It is the remarkable story of NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and his family, who lifted themselves out of poverty as undocumented immigrants living in Greece. Ultimately, Giannis finds himself on the world stage. The Chris Paul Project The Chris Paul project is a biographical film in development for Disney+ about NBA superstar Chris Paul. It follows Paul’s deeply moving story of family, legacy and destiny that helped make him who he is today. Flora & Ulysses Flora & Ulysses is a delightful comedy-adventure based on the Newbery Award–winning book about 10-year-old Flora, an avid comic book fan and a self-avowed cynic, who rescues a squirrel with unique superhero powers. Flora & Ulysses stars Matilda Lawler and is directed by Lena Khan (The Tiger Hunter). The film makes its debut on Disney+ February 19, 2021. Cheaper by the Dozen Cheaper by the Dozen, a reimagining of the hit comedy with Black-ish producer Kenya Barris, will air on Disney+ in 2022. The story centers on a multiracial, blended family of 12, navigating a hectic home life while managing their family business. Gabrielle Union is set to star. Diary of a Wimpy Kid Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which has spawned a successful live-action film franchise from the popular books, comes to Disney+ in 2021 as an all-new animated film. The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, exclusively for Disney+, is a spin-off of the popular Ice Age franchise from 20th Century Studios. The story centers on three series favorites: the prankster possum brothers Crash and Eddie, and the swashbuckling titular weasel, Buck. Simon Pegg will be returning in the role of Buck. The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild is slated for an early 2022 release. Night at the Museum Night at the Museum comes to Disney+ with a new twist: this time it’s animated. Shawn Levy, who has helped shape the blockbuster franchise as director of the previous films, and is also helming 20th Century Studios’ upcoming Free Guy, is on board as a producer. Night at the Museum launches on Disney+ in 2021. Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers, a hybrid live-action-animated feature for Disney+, is in development. Akiva Schaffer (Popstar) directs, and John Mulaney and Andy Samberg are set to star in the title roles with Seth Rogen doing a cameo. Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers is slated for spring 2022. Pinocchio Pinocchio is coming to Disney+ in a compelling new live-action retelling that will leverage state-of-the art CGI to bring Pinocchio to life. A living puppet, with the help of a cricket as his conscience, must prove himself worthy to become a real boy in a musical remake of the Disney animated classic. Robert Zemeckis directs and Tom Hanks stars. Peter Pan & Wendy Peter Pan & Wendy, inspired by the Disney animated classic, has David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon) at the helm. A young girl rebels against “growing up” by going with her two brothers to a magical land ruled by an ageless boy obsessed with adventure who is locked in an ongoing battle with a pirate captain. The cast includes Jude Law as Captain Hook and Yara Shahidi (Grown-ish) in the role of Tinker Bell. The film will premiere on Disney+. Disenchanted Disenchanted, a sequel to the hit film Enchanted, will stream exclusively on Disney+. Amy Adams returns as Giselle, who found her life flipped upside down when she fell out of her animated fantasy world and discovered herself stuck in real-life Manhattan. Sister Act 3 Sister Act 3, the third film in the beloved Sister Act series, is in development. Whoopi Goldberg is on board to star and produce, with Tyler Perry also signed on as a producer on the project. Sister Act 3 will premiere on Disney+.

Baymax Baymax, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ first-ever animated series, takes place in the fantastical city of San Fransokyo and features fan favorite healthcare bot, Baymax. Created by Don Hall, the Oscar-winning director of Big Hero 6, Baymax premieres on Disney+ in early 2022. Zootopia+ Zootopia+ heads back to the fast-paced mammal metropolis of Zootopia in a short-form series directed by Trent Correy and Josie Trinidad. Zootopia+ dives deeper into the lives of some of the feature film’s most intriguing characters, including Fru Fru, the newly married arctic shrew; Gazelle’s talented tiger dancers; and the sloth full of surprises, Flash. The short-form series debuts on Disney+ in Spring 2022. Iwájú Iwájú is an all-new original series coming to Disney+ in 2022. The series is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African comic book entertainment company Kugali and its founders Tolu Olowofoyeku, Ziki Nelson and Hamid Ibrahim. Iwájú, which roughly translates to “The Future” in the Yoruba language, is steeped in science fiction. Here we go, my list of 24 Baseball Books read in 2020, alone with a brief synopsis: Hall of Fame: Ball Four - Jim Bouton So, so good. I'm sure it doesn't have near the impact today that it did back in 1970 when released but it holds up pretty well and more than any other book I've read made me actually experience what it must have been like to be on an MLB team. And not just any team, but the legendary 1969 Seattle Pilots. Anyway, Bouton basically kept a diary on his season, got it published, and he doesn't pull any punches. Got himself blackballed from the game as a result. The Boys of Summer - Roger Kahn This was actually a re-read as I first read it as a teenager and it is responsible for a large chuck of my baseball fandom. The book has two parts really, the author describes his childhood as a Dodgers fan and then the beginning of his professional career as a sportswriter covering the Jackie Robinson Brooklyn Dodgers. Eight Men Out - Eliot Asinof Detailed account of the Chicago Black Sox. Book does a good job of retelling the scandal, giving you all sides. In a story with players who throw a World Series, professional gamblers and degenerates, Charles Comiskey still kinda comes off as the bad guy. Common trend of the year - baseball owners are not good people. A Day in the Bleachers - Arnold Hano I am not a Giants fan by any means but I loved this book. Only book of the 24 on this list that I couldn't get through my library so I actually bought it because I had heard good things. They were right, excellent read. Premise is that Hano, a sportswriter and Giants fan, happened to be sitting in the outfield bleachers at Polo Grounds for the great catch by Willie Mays in the 1954 World Series. Author recounts the whole experience of the day with a particular wit and charm. I finished this book in less than a day, partly because it is fairly short, but also because I was engrossed. BallPark: Baseball and the American City - Paul Goldberger This book is right in my wheelhouse - ballparks, architecture, city planning, etc. Also, the Goldberger (correctly) abhors the 1970s trend of the big concrete donut multi-purpose stadiums that all looked alike so he scored big points with me. You really see how influential Camden Yards was and how the White Sox had really unfortunate timing (and a lack of imagination) when they replaced the Comiskey Park. The Glory of Their Times - Lawrence S Ritter Upon the death of Ty Cobb in 1961, the author worried that baseball history was being lost and started contacting old ball players and traveling the country to get oral histories from them. More or less only players from the Dead Ball era, which is fine except there is nothing from Negro Leagues or any of its precursors so it limits the voices that we do hear. The audiobook I got from the library was the actual taped conversations with the old timers and the author. I recommend this format. Great to hear the old stories of the guys who lived them in their own voices. A little more of the "players today aren't tough, wah wah" than I would like but overall really good stuff. Common theme - Walter Johnson was universally admired as a player and a person. Ty Cobb universally admired as a player and despised as a person. Dynastic, Bombastic, Fantastic: Reggie, Rollie, Catfish, and Charlie Finley’s Swingin’ A’s - Jason Turbow I got this book because the early 70s A's won 3 World Series in a row, yet I felt like I had never heard much about them. And that ignorance probably increased my enjoyment of this book as all the crazy shit with this team was totally new and incredible to me. Great cast of charactors, and just a totally different era in the game compared to today. A's Owner Charles Finley probably the biggest d-bag of any person in any of these books. The Soul of Baseball: A Roadtrip through Buck O'Neil's America - Joe Posnanski The author drives around with Buck O'Neil as he promotes the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas City and advocates for great Negro League players to be recognized in the Hall of Fame. Anyone who watched Ken Burns' Baseball knows Buck O'Neil is a national treasure and this book helps who get to know him a little more. And America as well, perhaps. The Hall of Very Good Moneyball - Michael Lewis Okay, we all know about Moneyball. The movie did an incredible job at making a film out of this book. That said, the book is more informative and engaging still, at least to me. Shoeless Joe - W.P Kinsella You've probably heard of the movie made out of this book - Field of Dreams. I don't usually go for baseball fiction books but this one is pretty good. Fun Fact: the Terrance Mann character (James Earl Jones) is actually J.D Salinger in the book. And he was pissed to be depicted in a work of fiction and the movie had to change that to avoid a lawsuit. Neat stuff. Bang the Drum Slowly - Mark Harris Another baseball fiction book that I liked so I keep breaking my own rule I guess. A friendship between a cerebral pitcher and kind of a dimwitted catcher. The catcher is dying. Brian's Song for baseball, maybe? I've never actually seen Brian's Song. This book was made into a movie with Robert DeNiro as the catcher, but I've never actually seen it either. The Echoing Green - Joshua Prager Investigative work uncovering the cheating scandal of the 1951 NY Giants. Old school sign stealing with binoculars and a wire buzzer. This was the year that the Giants came from way back to tie the Brooklyn Dodgers for the pennant and Bobby Thompson hit the Shot Heard Round the World in the playoff. All tainted though! Cause the Giants were cheatin'. Game Six - Mark Frost Highlights the 1975 World Series between the Big Red Machine and the Boston Red Sox, particularly... Game Six. Often regarded as the greatest baseball game ever played. And it certainly was dramatic. That's the one that ends with the Fisk-waving-it-fair home run. Clemente - David Maraniss Another book where I said to myself, I don't know enough about this subject, and my library had a book about that subject so I checked it out and I'm glad I did. Hall of Pretty Good Heart of the Game - S.L. Price A first base coach in a minor league game is hit by a batted ball and dies. Price does a bio of the coach, the hitter and minor league baseball as a whole. Well done book. Bottom of the 33rd - Dan Berry Another book on the minor leagues, this one detailing a 33 inning game played about 40 years ago. Berry does a good job of making an interesting story out of a long, bleak game. Mickey and Willie - Allen Barra Dual biography of the parallel careers of the two great centerfielders. Probably better biographies out there of each man, but if you would rather read one book than two, here ya go. The Kid - Ben Bradlee Biography of Ted Williams. Is there a dual biography of Williams and Joe DiMaggio? My library didn't have one and I didn't look further. This is a pretty good bio of Ted though. His son, barf. Replacement Level Books The Big Fella - Jane Leavy The Matheny Manifesto - Mike Matheny Just Show Up - Cal Ripken Jr Wherever I Wind Up - R.A. Dickey More Than A Season - Dayton Moore Hall of Shame Astroball - Ben Reiter ------ Edit - The R.A. Dickey book is actually pretty good. I don't go for the Christian stuff but he's not preachy about it at all and pretty honest about his own faults. Dude had some crazy bad stuff happen to him growing up too. Anyway, I assumed the book covered his Cy Young award winning season but it was actually written and published before that happened. So, when I finished the book, I was disappointed to not read about that. Pretty crazy that R.A. Dickey got a book deal before that season, if you think about it.

What real life person from the show do you want to see interviewed this season?
At the end of some episodes they've shown an interview segment between a cast member and a real life person who has been portrayed on the show. So far they've had the real Beverly Goldberg, Eric Goldberg, Coach Mellor, Emmy Mersky, Jackie Geary, the JTP (Andy Cogan, Geoff Schwartz, Naked Rob, Matt Bradley), the Frentas (Virginia Kremp, Linda Schwartz, Essie Carp), Dave Sirota and Mike C. Levy, Dave Kim, and most recently, Bill Lewis. Plus Johnny Atkins, Jonathan Glascott, and Susan Cinoman were interviewed on Schooled. If they do one this season, who would you want them to interview for an episode? Personally, my top choice would be the real Barry. Bonus points if he is interviewed by TV Barry (Troy Gentle). Neither have appeared in an interview segment yet.
I know a lot of you are disappointed Schooled was cancelled. I've been somewhat indifferent to it but I realized that there is one story line I wish I was able to see continue: The return of Lainey's mother. For those who don't remember, in episode 18 of season 2 (appropriately called "Lainey's Mom") Lainey finds out that her mom is living in the area and, after some hand-wringing and some encouragement from Coach Mellor, she meets with her. The actress cast as her mom was Megyn Price. I've always enjoyed her work, having seen her in a couple of underappreciated sitcoms: Grounded for Life and Rules of Engagement. Lainey's mom was a somewhat mysterious character in the Goldbergs. No one knows where she is and they "can't even seem to remember" when she left exactly since different episodes give different/conflicting details about that event. I think it would have been fun to see AJ Michalka and her creating that relationship over Season 3 of Schooled. Alas.

Seeing Mike find the first ever hidden immunity idol was very cool. Come merge, the original Nakúm members mostly stuck together, leading to an eventual Nakúm final five, and ultimately a Brayden and Cody final two. In the end, Brayden was praised for playing a dominant physical game, and would earn all the jury votes unanimously. In my opinion, Brayden played the game very well, and was a great winner. Congratulations to Brayden Urban - u/Burban22 for becoming the next sole survivor of the series! Feel free to share your thoughts on this season, and stay tuned for the sign-ups of Kqmza's Survivor: Panama - Exile Island, where 16 contestants will be marooned for 39 days back in the Pearl Islands of Panama! It's time to clean up that Bengals rivalry. The Steelers aren't getting the respect they deserve because that Bengals rivalry is so disrespectful. If the players won't change, the fans need to change. It's time for Bengals and Steelers fans to stop with pejorative name-calling, to stop making excuses for dirty and dangerous play and start treating one another as colleagues with civility. The Steelers are clearly a worse team without Shazier and if both teams weren't so hell-bent on punishing one another, he might not be hurt and the Steelers wouldn't be hurting with his absence. This is how you show AFC North class. All of you.

The Vikings held the Panthers to 5/15 on third down—only problem was that the Panthers scored a TD on four of those five conversions. Despite Case Keenum turning the ball over three times and his supporting cast dying (the Vikings had as many drops and sacks allowed this game as the rest of the year combined), the offense still moved the chains and put up 24 points. The pass defense held the Panthers to 137 yards and a 64.9 passer rating allowed. If you take out the two busted run plays, the Vikings held the Panthers to under 2.8 yards per carry. Also, if you adjust for a screwy catch rule and fumble rule, the Vikings would have had another TD and one less turnover. Finally, if you adjust for the Vikings not sucking so much, this was really a blowout when you think about it.

The Eagles' Super Bowl dreams were torn to shreds in much the same way Carson Wentz' ACL was on Sunday. All eyes now focus on Nick Foles and whether he can conjure up the same magic that drove the successful NFC East campaign of 2013. With the playoffs already a lock and an easy schedule (plus the Raiders) down the stretch, there is still hope in Philadelphia that Foles emerges as the new Jeff Hostetler and leads a victory parade down Broad St.

Even after losing what ended up becoming the truest of revenge games (Chris Long, Rodney Mcleod, the ever majestic Nick Foles), the Rams proved they still belong in the upper echelon of teams this season, once again notching over 30 points for the eigth game this season. Get well soon, Carson. This could be a QB rivalry to watch for the next decade.

The last time the Jaguars had a winning season, Rush Hour 3 was in theaters. Just in time for Rush Hour 4, the Jaguars have found their way to a >.500 season, while in sole possession of first place in the division. Additionally, Jags games seem to have about a 15% chance to turn into a WWE match at a moment's notice. The Jaguars are determined to meme their way into the superbowl.

A week after seemingly conceding the division, Carolina finds themselves right back in the thick of it with a win vs. the Vikings and the Saints' loss to Atlanta. As heartening as the victory was, the road to the playoffs continues to be treacherous and the team's only consistency is its inconsistency on a seeming week-by-week basis. A complete effort will be needed vs. a potentially rejuvenated Packers squad.

Hard to tell what the loss to the Falcons means. On the one hand, it was in Atlanta. On the other, the Saints were outplayed. On a third hand, the flags were flying against the team in white and stunted their ability on both sides of the ball. The three-way logjam stays in the NFC South.

In an incredibly contraversial Thursday Night Game, Atlanta used a little bit of skill and left a lot to chance. LSU alum, Deion Jones, can't wait to step up against Brees again. Matt Ryan, however, is asking his wife to check the closet and under the bed for Marshon Lattimore. Round 2 should be a better game, with hopefully fewer injuries.

On the outside looking in for the playoffs, the Chargers followed up their unconvincing win against the Browns with a...more convincing win against the Redskins. The passing offense looked sharp, with both Keenan Allen and Tyrell Williams eclipsing 100 yards on the air. Desmond King also continues to showcase his strengths and is a rising star on defense. The Chargers will head to Kansas City next Saturday night for a pivotal, possibly division-deciding contest.

Its not like this was a must win game for the Ravens: winning out guarantees them a spot in the playoffs, and there are still many scenarios where they could lose to Cincy (with the other games being Browns and Colts) and still make it. Still, there's something disgusting about the Steelers getting the ball back with 2:25 to go, and everyone being just about 100% certain that the Ravens were about to get swept.

A much better overall game for the Chiefs this Sunday, where both lines played way above how they've been playing all year before this game. The O-line opened up holes for Kareem Hunt who had a good game for himself, and the D-line terrorized Derek Carr and held the Raiders to 0 points till halfway through the second half. Now back on track, the Chiefs are playing a pivotal game against the Chargers next week to most likely decide the division.
Dak Prescott put up his best numbers as a pro this week in an effort to keep the Cowboy's Rube Goldberg playoff machine on the rails. Significant improvement has been made in second-half play to capture the past two wins. In their three most recent losses, the Cowboys were outscored 72-0 in the second half. With the two most recent wins, the Cowboys have flipped that metric and outscored opponents 41-7 in the last half.

Sunday’s game was a clusterfuck, but it was a glorious clusterfuck. Now at 7-6 the Bills are hanging onto their dreams of ending the drought, with their season basically boiling down to a general strategy of A) Try to sweep the Dolphins and then B) pray that the Ravens don’t win out. If by some miracle the Bills actually manage to secure a 6th seed and end the longest playoff drought, it will have been courtesy of a Joe Webb miracle pass to D’eonte Thompson. So that will be a thing that has happened.

The Raiders are poorly coached, cannot defend the pass despite having a good pass rush, and have a stalled offense. There does not look to be another win on their schedule. If Jack and crew are not on the hot seat, they should be.
The Redskins this week looked like a team that had already checked out for the season. With little to play for and still riddled with injuries this team is limping to the finish.

Are the Cardinals a mediocre or inconsistent team? Outside of the AFC South and 49ers (without Jimmy G.) they're currently 1-6. Still being in the playoff hunt is more of a formality than reality as nearly all of the teams ahead have a tie-breaker. The season finish (WAS, NYG, and SEA) should tell us what the Cardinals are and give the team opportunities to find players who deserve a shot at next year and maybe more Ricky Seals-Jones types. Getting ahead of the desperate offensive line, wide receiver, and QBOF needs should be on their mind.

Who replaced John Fox with a doppelganger that understands offensive football? Queen Dopplepopolis can’t save John Fox’s job, but she did get the Bears a win this week. Trubisky turned in his second straight game with a passer rating over 110 and a high completion percentage. He has played extremely well since the bye and is taking measurable steps forward each week. The Bears host the Browns in two weeks with a shot to win the AFC North.

For most of Sunday's loss to the Lions, Tampa Bay utilized the 2-4-5 defense, featuring two defensive ends and nobody in the three technique. [OC] Draft Scratchers (The Most Bizarre Draft Picks in NFL History): The Story of Levi Jones (OT, Cincinnati, 2002)
The point of Draft Scratchers is to look at picks that were universally panned at the time, and that everyone criticized. It’s the series about the picks that left people scratching their heads at the time. It’s the series about the picks that make you go hmmm. It’s the series about the picks where you wonder what they were thinking and where you’re first guessing; it’s the series about picks that seemed bizarre, out of left field, and seemed on the surface like they made no sense at the time. However, through five installments of this series, it seems as though this series has been about picks that busted hard. The Jets drafting fullback Roger Vick in the first round was an awful pick. The Bears trading a first round pick for Rick Mirer, even though Mirer was hot liquid garbage, was an awful waste of a pick. The Jets drafting wide receiver Alex Van Dyke when they were terrible and needed every other position except a wide receiver was an awful pick. And the Eagles drafting defensive end Jon Harris, an unknown player who the coach then doubled down on by comparing him to Ed “Too Tall” Jones, was an awful pick. Through five installments, there have been four massive busts, and Tyson Alualu, who didn’t ever live up to top 10 status, but has been serviceable and is still in the league. Today, we’re flipping the script. We’re going to take a look at a pick that was universally panned, criticized, and questioned at the time by everyone… and actually worked out. People were left scratching their heads when the pick was made, but over time, the public would be proven wrong. For once, the general manager making the seemingly puzzling decision would turn out to be right. Let’s take a look at a first on Draft Scratchers. Part I: The Bungles Keep Bungling In 2001, the Cincinnati Bengals put together their best season since 1997. Under the guidance of head coach Dick LeBeau, who was in his first full season with the team after the interim title was removed from his name after 2000, the Bengals were firing on at least two cylinders. They had multiple winning streaks during the year. They started 2-0 for the first time since 1995. They had a top 10 defense in yards allowed. Of all the teams in the NFL in 2001, they were one of them. In their best season since 1997, the Bengals went 6-10 and finished in 6th place out of six teams in the AFC Central. The Bengals had fallen on hard times at this point. During the 2001 offseason, the Bengals signed Jon Kitna, who wasn’t even one of the top three free agent quarterbacks available according to Mel Kiper. Side note- that article includes a defense of Trent Dilfer that included the following line that was too good not to share:
“All this guy has done is win football games and stay away from the crucial mistake, yet there are still plenty of critics and doubters out there. With the Ravens, Dilfer galvanized the team when Brian Billick’s squad was at the crossroads, bringing the energy and leadership ability that created a winning atmosphere.”
That’s right- Trent Dilfer created that winning atmosphere for the Ravens. Not Ray Lewis or anyone else on arguably the greatest defense of all-time. Not Jamal Lewis, who had a fantastic rookie year with 1,364 rushing yards and 1,660 yards from scrimmage. No- it was the QB who completed less than 48% of his passes in the playoffs. It was Trent Dilfer who led the Ravens to glory. In hindsight, that’s hysterically stupid, and it was a stupid take for the time as well. Back to the topic at hand- Kitna had a really bad year with the Bengals. He was asked to throw a lot, leading the league in passing attempts with 581. He also made a lot of mistakes, throwing 22 interceptions and just 12 touchdowns, finishing tied for third in the league in interceptions that season alongside Aaron Brooks. And, in case there wasn’t enough evidence that this season was bad for Kitna, his passer rating of 61.1 was the worst in the NFL amongst all qualified quarterbacks; for some perspective, only one other quarterback had a passer rating below 71 that season, and that was Carolina quarterback Chris Weinke. It was clear going into 2002 that the Bengals needed to upgrade on offense. Their defense, all things considered, was fine; allowing 19.3 points per game and finishing in the middle of the pack is not bad when your offense is never on the field and is scoring just 14.1 points per game (dead last in the league). Fortunately, it looked somewhat promising. Somewhat. Part II: An Offense with Some Potential Heading into the 2002 NFL Draft, let’s look at what the Bengals had to work with from an offensive standpoint. Quarterback was still a major question mark, even after the signing of free agent Gus Frerotte. Frerotte made the Pro Bowl in 1996 with Washington, but was long removed from those days in 2002. He was brought in to compete with Kitna for the starting job; since the Bengals were picking 10th, their chances of getting one of the top two quarterbacks in the draft (David Carr or Joey Harrington) were non-existent. In hindsight, that was for the best. From a supporting cast standpoint, though, the Bengals were looking pretty good heading into 2002. They had signed wide receiver Michael Westbrook in free agency from Washington to replace Darney Scott, who left to join the Cowboys; Westbrook had 664 receiving yards in 2001, and in 1999, had 1,191 yards and nine touchdowns, finishing inside the top 10 in the league in both of those categories. Peter Warrick, their first round pick from 2000, was coming off of a 70-reception season. Chad Johnson didn’t do a whole lot in his rookie season, but he was a second round pick who showed potential. And, this isn’t even including TJ Houshmanzadeh, the team’s seventh round pick from 2001 who would go onto become one of the top #2 receivers in the league during the mid-2000s. Combined with the running game led by Corey Dillon, who was coming off of a Pro Bowl year in 2001 with 1,315 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns, and the supporting cast wasn’t terrible. On the offensive line, they were pretty good on paper. Despite the fact that the Bengals as a team threw 602 passes in 2001 (second most in the league behind the Lions at 609), they only got sacked 28 times, which was the 8th best total in the league. From a sack percentage standpoint (the percentage of passing plays where a sack was allowed), they only allowed a sack 4.4% of the time, which was the 4th best total in the league behind the Packers, Jets, and Bears. For some perspective, the Lions were the only other team to throw the ball at least 600 times in 2001, and they got sacked 66 times. With that offensive line, they had Willie Anderson and Richmond Webb as their bookend tackles. Anderson would later go onto become a 4-time Pro Bowler and would start 173 games for the Bengals (talk about hitting a home run with your first round pick in 1996), but had a very good year in 2001, starting all 16 games and getting called for just two penalties. Richmond Webb, a borderline Hall of Fame tackle, made the Pro Bowl seven times with the Dolphins from 1990-96, and started all 16 games with the Bengals in 2001. Yes, he was getting up there in age, as he would be 35 entering the 2002 season, but he was still playing at a really high level. A solid supporting cast and a really good offensive line that kept Kitna upright was what the Bengals had working with heading into the 2002 draft. That is, except for one position. Tight end. The Bengals were pretty bad at tight end. Tony McGee, who was a solid tight end for the Bengals in the mid-90s (including a 55-reception season in 1995), was not the man he used to be once he hit 30; he had just 14 receptions for 148 yards in 2001, which were both career lows for him. He was released during the offseason and signed with the Dallas Cowboys after a disappointing 2001 season where he was placed on IR with a sprained right knee. Marco Battaglia was off of the Bengals by the middle of the 2001 season and signed with Washington, and Kirk McMullen caught two passes for 15 yards in 2001 before never making it onto another NFL roster again. They had a hole at tight end. And the thought process going into the draft was that Jeremy Shockey, if he was on the board, would be the Bengals’ pick to fill that hole. After a 40-reception, 519-yard season with the Hurricanes where he found the end zone seven times, he was projected to go high in the first round. The time came for the Bengals to make their selection with the 10th pick in the draft. What they did was… well, it wasn’t that. Part III: The Puzzling Pick Associated Press writer Dave Goldberg put out his mock draft where he said it best: “Picking higher than this, the Bengals usually make the wrong picks.”. Another mock draft, which had the Bengals taking Miami cornerback Phillip Buchanon, said that the Bengals have no idea who they want, and that they usually erred on the side of logic. They’re not wrong; you don’t become the Bungles without some really questionable choices. Case in point- they turned down every pick of the Saints in 1999, plus a first rounder in 2000 and 2001 and a second rounder in 2002, just so they could take Akili Smith. The tenth pick rolled around. By this point, the Giants were debating whether the Bengals would take their top guy, Shockey. Multiple teams even called the Bengals for trade offers for the 10th spot. Cincinnati declined all offers. They had their guy. They took Levi Jones, an offensive tackle out of Arizona State. And everyone laughed. The pick was baffling. Again, you know it’s always a good sign when the player in question is shocked that he went that high; he was expecting to fall to the end of the 1st and expected the Bengals to either trade down or take a tight end. I was able to find this fan forum of the Miami Dolphins and they all laughed at the Bengals for making the choice, with not a single person defending it. One fan even wrote that “Cincy never ceases to amaze and entertain us.” Remember- the Bengals were absolutely fine on the offensive line. This was one of the top 10 offensive lines in football according to Chris Mortensen. They chose the one position, an offensive tackle, that they didn’t need any immediate help in. Again, the Giants offered to make a trade, and the Bengals declined. Nobody had Levi Jones going at #15 anyway, let alone #10, so it was highly likely that the Bengals would’ve gotten their guy. Head coach Dick LeBeau said this about the decision to not trade down (and I’ll give him credit; unlike the last coach I reviewed on this segment, he didn’t criticize the media and double down and say that Levi Jones was going to become the next Forrest Gregg):
“We considered that, but there really wasn’t the match. We thought we’d have to go too far, and we weren’t going to get what we’d call equal deal because these kinds of people were going to be gone. It just didn’t work out.”
Not surprisingly, the pick was widely panned by the media. Not only did the Bengals reach at a position they didn’t need, but they turned down a trade offer to take a guy that was going to be there at that spot, and wasn’t projected to go until super late in the first round. Some of the notable reactions from media members on the pick:
AP writer Barry Wilner: Cincinnati, which often makes strange draft selections, reached for offensive tackle Levi Jones at number 10 overall. No surprise the Bengals are the NFL’s biggest losers of the past decade.
San Francisco Chronicle writer Ira Miller: “And, as always, some choices raised questions. Cincinnati, choosing 10th, selected offensive tackle Levi Jones of Arizona State, which was much sooner than even Jones expected. The Bengals, who have not had a winning season since 1990, turned down trade offers that would have given them more picks and still allowed them to choose Jones.”
ESPN writer and draft analyst Mel Kiper: “Jones is a good football player, potentially. But at number 10? He was 17th on my board. Plus, the Bengals had bigger needs elsewhere; offensive tackle was not a crying need. They could have gotten Jones if they had traded down… to me, they needed to draft Buchanon or trade down. Don’t get me wrong: Jones is a talent who could be a solid left tackle… but I disagree with the pick. The Bengals had better options. A trade down would have been huge. Why lock onto Jones at number 10 when they could have picked up valuable picks later in the draft and still gotten Jones later?”
ESPN writer Len Paquarelli: “All of their rationale disappeared when the Bengals chose Arizona State offensive tackle Levi Jones. That’s not to suggest Jones won’t be a good player. But he isn’t going to be a player, period, anytime soon. Certainly the Bengals took him much too high, but the bigger issue is that Cincinnati was set at tackle, and had more pressing needs… Jones is all but certain to replace the venerable John Jackson as the number three tackle, but one expects to get more from the 10th overall player in the draft. Cincinnati offensive line coach Paul Alexander rated Jones very highly, but the Bengals would have been more immediately served by selecting one of two Miami players (Shockey or Buchanon). At least, that is, if you buy into the coaching staff’s sentiments that the Bengals are on the cusp of respectability.
Considering the history of the Bengals at drafting, to say that this pick was widely panned and criticized would be an understatement. But were the media members proven wrong? Did the Bengals get it right? Part IV: Surprisingly Good That summer, the Bengals signed Levi Jones to a five-year deal, locking up their first round pick before the start of training camp. Then, he moved up the depth chart when the Bengals released offensive tackle John Jackson in an expected move. Still, Cincinnati had their two bookend tackles in Willie Anderson and Richmond Webb, so Jones started the 2002 season behind both of them on the depth chart. Sure enough, after one week, the critics of the pick grew even louder when the Bengals’ tight ends recorded zero catches, and when Levi Jones played some minutes as a tight end. That’s right- the Bengals lined him up at tight end. The Bengals were 0-4 after four weeks, and things were not looking good for anyone. But Jones got his opportunity when Richmond Webb tore a muscle in his chest and was placed on IR. Webb, admittedly, was having a really bad season, especially by his standards; he even said during the week that he was unhappy with his performance, and the possibility of Jones leapfrogging Webb on the depth chart was out there. After Webb’s injury, though, Jones became the starter by default. When he was announced as the starter, AP writer Joe Kay wrote this story about how Jones and everyone knew that the pick was widely criticized:
The moment the words left commissioner Paul Tagliabue’s mouth, the guffaws began. With the 10th overall pick in the NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals had selected tackle Levi Jones from Arizona State. Tenth pick? The analysts chortled. One after another suggested the Bengals could have traded down and still gotten Jones later in the first round. The consensus was that Jones wasn’t worth the 10th overall pick. The soft-spoken lineman heard it all. On Sunday, he gets his first chance to have his say. “I tell this when I see him: This is the time he has to prove to everybody that he wasn’t a bad pick for the Bengals,” right tackle Willie Anderson said. “He knows everybody is looking at him right now, and he’s out to prove a lot of people wrong.” “There’s a lot on my shoulders,” [Levi] Jones said. “I’m a rookie, but I can’t be a rookie on Sunday afternoon.”
So, how did Jones fare? Well… he was actually pretty good. Turns out, for once, the Bengals were right. Whether they should’ve taken him over Jeremy Shockey, I’m not sure (Shockey turned out to be a 4-time Pro Bowler and later in his career, helped the Saints win Super Bowl XLIV. However, Jones was not a bust; far from it, in fact. He was actually a very good player. He was the starting tackle for every game during the 2003 and 2004 season, and started 15 games in 2005. During that 2005 season, for the first time since 1990, the Cincinnati Bengals made the playoffs. Led by quarterback Carson Palmer, the Bengals allowed just 21 sacks that season, which was the second best total in the NFL behind the Indianapolis Colts at 20. Running the ball, Rudi Johnson led the way with 1,458 yards (seventh in the league) and 12 touchdowns (tied for fifth in the league). Jones was so good and so instrumental in the success of the team that season that in 2006, the Bengals gave him a 6-year extension worth $40 million. This figure made him the fourth highest paid offensive tackle in football history at the time, only behind Jonathan Ogden, Orlando Pace, and Walter Jones (all three of whom are in the Hall of Fame). Even Mel Kiper, who criticized the Bengals and their thought process during the draft, later called Jones one of his biggest whiffs.
“I bring up Jones because I thought he was a reach with the 10th pick. At the time, Cincinnati needed picks and players, so I thought the Bengals should trade down, get more picks, and pick Jones later if he was still available. I liked Jones, I just thought it was a reach to draft him that high, but he’s turned out to be a very good player.”
While injuries eventually derailed his career, as he was cut in 2009, when he was healthy, he was considered to be one of the best tackles in all of football. In seven seasons with the Bengals, he started 89 games at left tackle, and was not only good enough to warrant a second contract, but to get a second contract that made him one of the highest paid in NFL history for his position at the time. Not too shabby for a guy that was widely panned and written off when he got drafted. With practically every post on this series, the media and the common man turned out to be right. When they questioned the pick and thought that the GM was just trying to outsmart everyone by doing something that made no sense on paper, they were right. But this is the first time in this series that the script has flipped. Everyone thought that the Bengals whiffed on this pick. They neglected to trade down and reached big time on a player that they didn’t even need. In the end, though, the Bengals got a franchise left tackle for much of the 2000s that anchored one of the best offensive lines in football before injuries derailed his career, and got a player that would become one of the highest paid of all-time at his position. The decision had no business working. But for once on Draft Scratchers, it did.
